Hi everyone! We gave our students a map test where they had to label the states on the US Map. We told them they would only need to know 5, but they could label as many as they knew. I had some students do the minimum of 5 and some students did 37. My question is this: should my students who got 5/5 get the same grade as the students who got 37/37? I am not sure if it is fair to give those who got a 5/5 a 100% and the students who got 37/37 a 100%. What would you do? How would you grade this? Please help. Thanks in advance!

Well, you really can't raise the requirement once you tell them they only need to know five. I think that is pretty good for second graders. Our kids don't learn states until third grade. I have a hard enough time getting them to know the 7 continents!

Give the students who did more extra credit : 100% + the number extra.

If a student masters a standard are they outstanding or satisfactory? We don't use the traditional ABCD grades, we use O, S, NI, U. In your above example I would say knowing 5 of the states is satisfactory, but more than that would be outstanding. That can be harder to do with the traditional grades because "C" is consider average but S for satisfactory covers a wider range. Maybe next year you could do a scale and let parents know ahead of time that knowing 1-5 states = C. 6-9 states = B and 10 or more would be an A.

I like the grading scale. We don't have O's etc. We were thinking about revisiting the map test later in the year. I will definitely use that grading scale. Thank you!
