I don't know why these plans stress me out so much! would you mind sharing your daily schedule for the first day of school. I'd love to see how others manage this day.

team building / getting to know you activities. I also put them into groups of 4 and have them make a list of what our class rules should be, which we then meet as a whole class to discuss and finalize. We have an all grade recess, so all the kids can get to see each other and the new ones can meet other folks.

I have a scavenger hunt in the room, which they have to work in teams to complete. I want them to look at the posters on the wall and really pay attention to them, which serves as a preview for what we're going to cover for the year. I have them write down 3 things about themselves without putting their name on it and crumple it up. We then have a "snowball" fight for a good 60 seconds, and when time is up, they pick up whatever ball is closest to them and try to figure out who it is. I found this idea here on PT years ago, and my kids love it!

This is what I did on day one last year. I'll be changing some things this year. Anything I don't finish usually gets moved to my day two plans. My Power Point of procedures and such is long, so that continues through day two.

7:45-8:00 bookbags, paperwork in basket, supplies in desks and in crates, wordsearch

8:00 intro self and demonstrate marking attendance/lunch count

8:15-8:30 begin rules discussion--see Power Point on classroom procedures and banner

Talk about how each rock is unique/special and looks good together/works together. Discuss how we are special and unique but put together we look like a good community.

1:30-2:00 Continue Power Point on procedures/curriculum

2:00 Do assignment books, prepare to dismiss, review dismissal rules, wordsearch while waiting to dismiss
