Grrr! Get your heads our of your....

So we just got a survey from our union.

The corp is asking input on how to make up 1 freakin' snow day. ONE!

Our options are to go past Memorial Day, go on a Saturday, add an hour before for 6 days, add an hour after for 6 days, or add 1/2 before and 1/2 hour after for 6 days.

I teach 1st. I have a baby who NEVER sleeps. Adding hours to the day would be awful. Day care isn't going to open early for me for 6 days so I can get in to work on time. We only have a 1/2 hour prep as it is...and now we need to prep for an extra hour????? Plus, my firsties are done by 2 anyway...going until 3:30 would be like pulling teeth from an alligator!

A Saturday would kill me! It is really the only day that I can relax a bit and try to nap while the kid naps. And what about child care for those of us with small children. Our day care is closed on the weekends. Who is going to watch my kid because the corporation wants to make sure we're done before Memorial Day?

Here's the icing on the cake: we are off of school tomorrow. It was supposed to be a snow make up day. They decided not to use it as such. Now they want to know how to make up one extra day! Seriously?????

To me, the only option is to go one extra day past Memorial Day. Something tells me all of the high school teachers and those without young families will disagree.

This is the first time I've been angry about my job all year!

What was their reasoning for not using the built in snow day as a snow day make up? That just sounds bizarre.

Our District once made us make up our snow day on a Saturday! We were all SO MAD!!!! It was a total waste of a school day. It was our town's annual Clean Up Day.... So most of the day all of the students were allowed to go around town picking up trash. We thought attendance would be down, but SURPRISE! The parents were THRILLED to send their kids to school on Saturday for free babysitting. I ended up having a really fun day that Saturday. Anyway... I feel your pain. Sometimes I wonder why they can't just let those snow days go! I hope you get to make it up the day after Memorial Day. That makes the most sense!

I lost President's Day and two days off spring break...and winter isn't even over. They try not to extend the year due to graduation and project graduation. The one year they did the parents got mad at the teachers.... because of shore rentals...

I hope they go after Memorial for you also. If our 2 hr delay turns into a close today, that is when we will makenit up.

As for graduation, our seniors graduate on time. They don't have to make up any days that occur after the set graduation date.

I live in North Carolina. We have had an unusual number of days off for snowstorms. We had already used up the built-in days for bad weather before the last two days off this past week. We are in a similar dilemma. When to reschedule the days? Would the governor forgive them?

As of this moment, we have rescheduled the last two snow days for spring break, which doesn't make our parents very happy. I suspect that we won't have good attendance on those days if families had already planned trips to Disney World, etc.

I am sorry to hear about your district's handling of the snow days. It doesn't sound as if they are willing to work with teachers of young children. I am glad that our district asked principals to "work with teachers" who have daycare issues. My feeling is that you should approach your principal and express your concerns about your district's proposals for make-up days.. Perhaps she will be willing to work with you as well.

How annoying! Why can't they just suck up one stupid day? Is that one day going to make the kids so much smarter???? What about the half hour. Their heads are in the clouds. The kids are checked out after a long day just like the teachers, and with good reason Enough is enough. So the extra time will be spent watching an education video, doing hw, reading a book, seriously is that going to make the kid smarter or make up for a missed day? NO. I feel your pain and everyone will resent coming in on a SAT. They have no regard for teachers that have their own kids.

I teach first and one year we added 15 minutes to the beginning of the day and 15 minutes to the end. It really wasn't that big of deal. I and my students hardly noticed the extra time. Most were already at school on the playground anyway in the morning, and the afternoon actually afforded us some closure to the day instead of madly finishing and rushing to the bus. Kind of enjoyed the extra time, in fact.

I'd take the extra half hour at the beginning and end if we could add extra recess. My little ones only get one 15 min. recess a day. Something tells me that my high achieving Title One school won't buy that idea though. It will be seen as more time to teach the standards.

I have no idea why today wasn't used. I think it is ridiculous! Especially now that we are looking for ways to make up one day....

Trumans's Mom

Don't blame you. Little ones need recess!! Our school hours are 8:10 - 3:20. So we have a morning recess: 15 min. Noon recess: at least 20 - 30 min. and an afternoon recess of 20 min.

I had to comment just to say that I am jealous of the recess some of you get! I teach 3rd and we get afternoon recess once a week for 20 minutes. It was twice a week but got cut down to once a few weeks ago.

Our school hours are 8:30-2:50

This is stupid.

Sadly, it works both ways. My union recently demanded, and was granted, a free half-day for teachers with no work requirements due to the district network going down for 2 hours on the day grades were due. They didn't care that the DO extended the due date a full two days since those 2 days went into our vacation time.

Some common decency from both sides of the equation sure would make me happy.
