I taught grade 7/8 art for two years. Their favourite lesson was iPaint, which is a spoof on iPod ads. I've got some samples posted here near the bottom: http://www.msdrummond.com/?cat=44

I got a LOT of ideas from Arts and Activities magazine.

What kind of resources do you have access to?

If you have a budget,,,

i've so far done the following with 7/8 :
- big oil pastel drawings of cross sectioned fruit, talking themtthrough getting the shapes, proportions, values (lights and darks) and colours, really drawing what they see

-bad art. i challenged them to make "bad art" with scraps, paint, markers...and then found famous art works that looked like their pieces

-book making. we collected scrap paper and sewed it into card stock to make sketchbooks. each class i have them do 20 versions of an element of art (line, shape, colour etc..) as a warm up. this was tricky at an all boys school. i had to teach them how to thread a needle and a few have motor-skills issues. they were really happy when their hard work paid off though.

-linoleum prints. we looked at inuit printmaking and i read a few stories from inuit oral history. they picked one to illustrate and made 10 prints

great ideas! I am really intrigued by the book making lesson you listed here and am curious about the "20 versions of an element of art warm up" Can you give me a little more detail about how you teach this warm up?
