Clip to ScrapBook #1

This is my second year teaching and actually my first full year. I started teaching in Nov. of last year. My school`s theme is team/body building. How can I create my own 3rd grade classroom based on this?

A sports theme would go good with your team/body building. I have some sports ideas I found if you want some ideas. I think your third grade class would love it!

How about animals?

I think the sports theme is probably the best, but if lots of others have it too, maybe an animal group would work. Most animal groups work together, so you could do monkeys or bees. There's lots of material out there for either of those. You could take monkeys in a jungle direction and add in diversity - we're all different, but we all serve a purpose in keeping the jungle alive. Maybe it's a little corny, but 3rd graders might like it!

Could definitely have fun with a crossword puzzle using their names on the first day of school. Oriental Trading has some fun puzzle crafts. Type in puzzle theme ideas - PT teachers come up with the best ideas

Sports/Team theme

Clip to ScrapBook #7

Here are some ideas I found a while back when I was doing a sports theme.

All-Star Behavior
- students earn fouls that are posted on their basketball around the room
- use football helmets and penalty flags for 1st down, 2nd down, etc.
- use 3 strikes and baseball

Job Board
- a field goal post
--Jobs are listed on the uprights.
--The horizontal bar says "Teamwork."
--use clothespins with the students names to point to their job for the day
- Pitch In
--have baseball mitts as the job and baseballs with each student's name
--use the velcro dots as a way of changing the jobs around

Ongoing Games
- called Football Frenzy
--set teams and use this game for all subjects
--students draw a card that says 5 yards, 15 yards, fumble, interception, etc. I then
--ask them a question
--if correct, their team moves that many yards
--if incorrect, their team got a down
--even have a nerf ball that they could throw through the goalposts to score an extra point

Reading Corner
- "The Dugout"-I bought a green rug to look like turf and bought blow up baseball cushions from Oriental Trading Company for the kids to sit on around the room. They also have basketball, football, and soccer cushions. They were very cheap.
- Reading Arena
--reading library also has a pair of wooden bleachers with sport beanbag chairs
- Field of Dreams
--sports pillows and green carpeting
- “Get in the Game...READ!”

"Author's Chair"
- bought a blow up chair that looks like a glove

Pigskin Geography
- have football helmets for their chosen team posted on a US map.
- Each week, they have to find out how many points their team won or lost by and which direction and distance they had to travel for their game.
- The kids could also get familiar with finding scores on the internet or in the newspaper. They could keep a journal about it.

Talk About How We are a Team
- activity with Hoola Hoops
--stand in a circle and hold hands.
--get the Hoola Hoop around the circle without breaking hands
--has to go over (and under) each person
--time themselves and work together to get faster and faster
- ball of yarn
--stand in a circle
--hold on to the piece of yarn coming from the ball and then throw the ball to someone
--say their name and then they hold the piece of yarn and throw the ball to someone else
--Keep going until everyone has thrown and caught the ball
--will end up with a big spider web, if everyone holds on to their piece of yarn
--this is the team, all connected
--students one by one let go of their piece of yarn. The web falls apart and we are not a team.
--everyone is important

Beginning of the Year Board
- give each student a soccer ball piece of paper and they have to write a few goals that they hope to achieve --on a green bulletin board, staple a net to look like a goal and put soccer balls on there --title it “Aiming for our ______ Grade Goals”
- "Grade 4 Has a Great Starting Line-Up” --put everyone's name on a baseball, glove, or bat
- “Kick-Off a New Year in ______________ Class!
--a helmet in the middle surrounded by several footballs.
--use school colors
- “We're a Team!”
--photos of the students, teacher, assistants and specialists

Two Sayings for Room
- “Teamwork Works”
- “There is No I in Team”

First Day:
- a pencil on each desk the first day that says “Teamwork Works”

Door
- “Welcome to Mrs./Miss/Ms./Mr. __________ Team”
- pennants with each child's name
- “Ms./Mr./Mrs. All-Star Team”

Reading
- a bulletin board that says "Catch a Great Book!"
--write the names of books you read on baseballs and write names of authors you introduce on gloves
- "You Always Hit a Home Run When You Read!"

Birthday Bulletin Board
- “Have a Ball on Your Birthday”
--write birthdays on various sports balls

Spelling
- create a baseball diamond and name it “Homerun Spelling”-If students earn a 100% on their test, they have a baseball on the Home Plate, 1 wrong - 1st base, 2 wrong- 2nd base, etc. Then when a child earns 15 homeruns, they earn a baseball pen.

Behavior Management
- call it Swoosh
--keep a little scoreboard looking grid
--When the class makes a basket they receive two tallies, and when the teacher earns a basket I
receive two tallies.
--If the students have the most tallies at the end of the week, they earned a “Fun Friday Recess.”
--If the teacher has the most tallies at the end of the week, they don't earn a “Fun Friday Recess.”

Student of the Week
- MVP

Rubrics
- use the words “home run," "base hit," or "strike out"

Bulletin Boards
· “Home Run Work”
· “Teamwork” (for jobs bulletin board)
· “Attitudes are Contagious! Is Yours Worth Catching?”
· “You'll Always Miss 100% of the Shots You Don't Take”
· “We Make a Great Team”
· “Kick-Off the Year with a Good Book”
· “Great Computer Scores” (used with a goal post, yard lines, and footballs)
· “Three Cheers for Our Spelling Scores”
· “Net Good Scores”
· "Bounce On In to First Grade"
· “Keep a Winning Attitude”
· “Kicking off for a Great Year!”
· “Give it Your Best Shot!”
· “We Make a Great TEAM!!”
· “_______ Grade All-Stars”
· "Batter Up! It's Going to be a Great Year!"
· "Look Who's Hitting a Home Run in ____'s Class!"
· “Kick-Off the School Year Right!”
· “All-Star Conduct”

Grade
· Mrs./Mr. Ms. _____ Starting Line-Up"
--a team rooster on the door and jerseys with the children's last name on the jersey with their class
number

Trading Cards
· make in Printshop or some other computer program
· saying, "Meet the All Star Team of 2007"

End of Year
· have a ceremony at the end of the year where everyone earns their "Varsity Letter"

Newsletter
· All-Star News

Activities
· hang team pennants from ceiling or on the wall
· design own pennant or sports t-shirt for display or nametags
