I have seen lots of really cute monster themed classroom items. I think it would just depend on how sensitive the class is...but overall I would say it would be a fine theme.

I have a book called The Monster Who Lost his Mean that I bought through Scholastic that you might like. The basic message is "be yourself."

Monsters Inc.

A cute idea for this would be to use monsters inc. or monsters that have kid like features. If they are cartoon or not scary it should be suitable for their age.

Monsters...not scared at all

I had this theme for 5 years in my second grade classroom. It never was a problem. One board was "Monstrous Good Work!" I had monster helpers, the calendar, made many of my own things- the whole shabang(spelling?). The kids even had a monster binder, the next year a folder, to take home. If you need any of ideas or want copies of a few things I made, feel free to pm me.

Monsters don't have to be scary! I was interning with a third grade class last year and the teacher had cute little monsters all around. It went really well with GoNoodle since the students "leveled up" on monsters when they completed activities.
