Writing but student cannot spell

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am working with a small group of students in grade 3, special education. Two of them have great difficulty with spelling. I work with them on writing assignments typically assigned by the classroom teacher but occasionally have time to create my own lessons. I feel as thought they need basic vocabulary first. What do you think? I am a new teacher and working only as an aide now. How can they write when they are unable to spell? I would like to play these Build a Word games (phonics/word families) and am looking for ways to play them at a basic level, or other games that might be helpful.

The third student is spelling pretty well. Would like to differentiate for him also.
Thanks!

Use their senses

What I've found works well for special needs students and spelling is to use as many sensory ways to teach the words as possible. Using pipe cleaners, sand, or even playdough could help the students learn word spellings.

we go over phonic rules and such. When we are working on writing, I will often use a word bank or a graphic organizer of some sort.

We will do the brainstorming together and often the graphic organizer as well. It helps them to "see" the progression of the sentences/paragraphs.
