teaching traits/mentor texts vs plagiarism

Clip to ScrapBook #1

An observation- students who started learning from 6 traits in 6th-8th grades are being told by their sophomore English teacher that their pieces are too similar to something else and are borderline plagiarized.

A genuine question here- I'm not dissing 6 traits or mentor texts, but how do you teach kids to be original and not plagiarize? Have you had this happen?

Personally, I have students analyze pieces of writing for organization, form, and focus strategies- never on the same content. I'd give a sample writing piece if the same type but not the same topic- this helps to prevent the possibility of plagiarizing.
