Need help with 1st grade Writing Workshop

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello,

I am a reading specialist going into several first grades to do writing workshop. I pretty much run it according to Lucy Calkins Unit of Study - however many of my lessons revolve around Six Traits. At this point in the year, we have really only talked about IDEAS, because it is such a huge and essential trait. I go into each classroom either 2 or 3 times per week for times ranging from 30 min - 1 hour. The teacher and I conference after the mini-lesson. We each probably get to meet with 3 kids each day.

We use a sign-up sheet for conferencing and therefore, some kids get more conferences than others. Every couple of weeks I do a "sweep" of the class and call up kids who haven't conferenced in a while. What we are finding, is that some students are taking a very long time working on a piece. When they finally get called up to their conference, it is a month or more old and it's hard to talk about the current pointers being taught in mini-lessons, because their piece was started before they were taught current pointers.

Any ideas? Should we call kids up for conferences differently? Should I do away with the sign-up sheet? Should we just go down the class list and call kids alphabetically so that everyone gets the same number of conferences? Should we call the lower writers more often and the stronger writers less often?

Help!!!!! And thank you!!!

I would do away with letting them sign up for their conferences on their own.

I would make a schedule for the week and put the names of the students under specific days and post it in front of the classroom. That way the kids know what day they are meeting with you and it will put some pressure on them to meet whatever goal you talked about in the previous conference.
