Bare Book ideas needed

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I order white hardback blank books each year for my students to create and write stories in. I order them from Bare Books. They are wonderful- but I am in a rut. I give the kids the same assignment each year- writing a narrative. Then they recopy it into the book and illustrate it. They usually are happy with their final products- but I would like to come up with a much more interesting beginning assignment. Does anyone out there have something awesome to share???

Maybe a fairy tale instead

or even a fractured fairy tale, based on their favorite. You could have them write from another character's point of view. They could still write and illustrate the final product in the book. I did the fractured fairy tale (but created our own books) and the librarian has the books on display for all grade levels to enjoy while they are in the library.

poetry is fun for bare books...they can write various kinds and collect them in their writing notebook and then decide which ones to "publish" in their bare books. April is poetry month, so I always try to do something along these lines then.
