Writer's notebooks

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Next year I will be seeing small groups (7 or fewer) students in grades 3-5 for 40 minutes at a time. As the reading specialist, obviously I'll be doing lots of reading and strengthening skills with them. In theory, I would like to incorporate writer's notebooks, because I often see kids at the upper levels who are still struggling with writing, partially because they just don't have any practice coming up with thoughts to put on paper. I'm not sure how this could look in practice. I'm an "open book" (pun intended) on this - can anyone suggest how they structure the use of writer's notebooks?

Writer's Notebook is a perfect fit!

Our students connect with so much more of what they read when they spend time activating their schema, so use your writer's notebook to make predictions, conduct story impressions (front-loading vocabulary), making inferences based upon the title, characters, or pictures within the text. Then use your notebook to gather reactions to the text and for making connections to the text or even dialectic or paired response journal entries during and after
reading. I think the possiblities are endless!
You could also check out the Nevada Writing Project (or google writing fix) to see if they have any further ideas for you to implement.
