Daily 5 vs. Readers/Writer's Workshop

Clip to ScrapBook #1

At a recent interview I was told that the district had moved away from Daily 5 and was doing Reader's/Writer's Workshop now. My personal teaching evolution followed the opposite path.

I wish I had asked at the time but I didn't. I'm curious. What's the likely reason for such a switch? Any idea?

Thanks,
Tammy

because they can definitely be used together. Daily 5 is the management piece where as readers workshop are the activities. Would love to see how they used it. When I did Daily 5, my mini lessons were from readers workshop and the choices were changed as needed.

The reading workshop model starts with a whole group mini lesson, followed by independent reading time during which the teacher conferences with individuals or groups, and then a closes with a group or pair share. The writing model is the same, except with independent writing time.

Daily 5 is the activities that provide a structure for reading and writing. A big difference is all students are reading or writing at the same time in a workshop and not choosing which to do. Basically you can use the strategies of Read to Self and Work on Writing for your independent time. I still use those when I introduce my workshops.

Workshop works well with Cafe since Cafe can be the mini lessons.
