Hi Everyone!

I am moving back to second grade after being in Kindergarten. I need to come up with some centers. When I was in second grade before, I was in for a maternity leave and used the centers the other teacher made, which was lovely and her centers rocked...she made pretty much all of them. Does anyone have a great resource for ideas on centers to use during guided reading? I know of daily 5 but wanted to see if there was anything out there that you may know about. Any blogs?

I would be happy to pass on anything I come across. I also made a move from 4th to 2nd a few years ago. I love the little ones and the biggest adjustment for me at first was gauging their ability to work independently. At first, the seem soooo young but it is amazing how far they come by the end of the year!

Please pass on anything you come across too! I have been on P.T most of the afternoon and on the second grade board searched blogs and just checking different one out.

Good luck in 2nd grade....natural to be nervous, but you'll be fine!!

I am going back to teaching second graders in the Resource Center and found that the blog you suggested (Simply 2nd resources) had amazing ideas! Thank you, can't wait to try them out!!

I got most of my ideas from the book "what the other kids are doing while I'm doing centers (or guided reading groups)" or a title very similar to that. Here are some things I like to do with my 2nd graders:
1. dictionary work (use the worksheet right out of the book above)
2. math menu (another great book)
3. these math grid pictures (they have to follow I-4 and color it a certain color and then the result is a picture)-another book from the teacher store
4. expand a sentence (so old -caterpillar template-not sure if it's 6 traits or not) The sentence starts off small- One cat purred. Then the student adds one word each time to make it more descriptive. One happy cat purred. One happy cat purred gently. and so on.
5. thesaurus work
6. Leapsters or computers if you have enough for a group
7. Listening Center with books and headphones and a follow up paper.

That is my recollection right now. Hope that helps
