You might try modelling and using sentence frames that give specifiically want you want to see in their responses. I do it with the read aloud as examples.
I think the author is trying to....and here is an example...
The writing in this book is really descroptive, let me read this part so you can see it with me...
My favorite summary about characterization "Somebody (character) wanted.....but...so...where they fill in the blanks.
When my kids are sharing a written response, I ask them to quote something from the book to support their thoughts, regardless of what they are talking about.
