Clip to ScrapBook #1

My kids have been doing a lot of independent reading in class this year. I want them to start sharing what they are reading, but they responces are just summaries of what they are reading. I have a responce log where they have dozens of things they can write about however, I also don't want them just going up in front of class reading from their logs.

You might try modelling and using sentence frames that give specifiically want you want to see in their responses. I do it with the read aloud as examples.

I think the author is trying to....and here is an example...

The writing in this book is really descroptive, let me read this part so you can see it with me...

My favorite summary about characterization "Somebody (character) wanted.....but...so...where they fill in the blanks.

When my kids are sharing a written response, I ask them to quote something from the book to support their thoughts, regardless of what they are talking about.
