I just started my persuasive writing unit however, I feel like using advertising as the main focus. I am unsure of how to incorporate persuasive writing assignments into this. any thoughts?

I have done this before having the students create brochures for local attractions, zoos, amusement parks, etc. Or, you could have them "create" their own attraction. It could be hand created or done on computers. You can make it cross curricular by incorporating something from social studies in with it (visit a city/place in USA or other countries); or something from reading (advertise a book read recently - google book commercials). You could have them invent something (science) and create an ad (written or commercial) for it.

This is just me spouting off some ideas - hope something helps!

My teaching partner also has students write a persuasive letter to the principal and their parents.

you could write persuasive advertisements for tv or radio (and record them if you have the technology). Get the kids to sell real things or they could invent their own things to 'sell'.
