How do you communicate with parents as to what is happening in your classroom? How often do you send a newsletter? If you wouldn't mind sharing a sample that would be great! Thanks.

I do not send a newsletter. I communicate with parents through the student's agendas most of the time. I also send whole class e-mails periodically. (reports, field trips, school events, etc.) Sometimes I even send an old fashioned note.

Trying something new

Clip to ScrapBook #5

This year I am going to try something new. First I am going to try to send a newsletter home every week, but included in that I want to have an article included each week from a different student. One of our centers that we will be having this year is going to be centered on Current Events. I would love to have a student each week write an article for our newspaper each week. Whether it is something in the news or something that happened in the class (funny or serious) I think that the parents will really enjoy it.

I love the format for your newsletter! It is simple-straight-forward communication! Thanks for sharing!!! I am looking to do a better job of communicating with parents this year - do you email, post on website or just use paper copy?
Thanks for sharing!

I never thought about doing that! I would love to add a student written section into mine. How do you manage who writes each week?

Mustang-Thanks for your input I do email it, I also post on our website, and I send the hard copy home.

This will be my first year doing it.. So I can tell you what I am planning on doing, now I might change it... lol

I might have each student write on the same topic each week.. and then the class choosing which one they want.. They cant vote for their own...

or

I will make it one of my jobs each week.. Journalist and they need to write the article for the week..

I will probably make it a job. I am doing a travel theme this year and so I might call it... Travel Journalist.. even as I write this I am getting an idea of having them write the article as if they just got back from a visit to the country that we learned about that week... hmm..

I send my newsletter home once a month highlighting upcoming subjects being taught, important dates and usually a helpful hint about homework/adolescence/consistency/websites, etc....
I love the idea of having a journalist job...I may just add that before school starts!!!

Grade level

Our grade level sends one out monthly. I used to subscribe to The Mailbox and their website (free if you subscribe-www.mailboxcompanion.com) offers lots of free templates to either fill in and print online or print a blank one and fill in-also can be found in some of the mailbox magazines. If you're looking for those I'd check with other teachers and your school media center. You may check out the companion site-those templates may be free?
