CONCORD, New Hampshire (AP) ó Tomie dePaola, the prolific children's author and illustrator who delighted generations with tales of Strega Nona, the kindly and helpful old witch in Italy, died Monday at age 85.
DePaola died at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, according to his literary agent, Doug Whiteman. He was badly injured in a fall last week and died of complications following surgery.
He worked on over 270 books in more than half a century of publishing, and nearly 25 million copies have been sold worldwide and his books have been translated into more than 20 languages.

Oh it makes me so sad when beloved authors die. I love his books and read them often to my class.

Two others I think we probably won’t have too much longer are Eric Carle and Patricia Polacco.

I love Tomie dePaola! I took my son to one of his book signings decades ago. He was so good with the kids. I list his books among my favorites. Rest in peace Tomie and thank you for the gift of your books.

I saw him at a literary conference many years ago. I remember him saying his favorite color was white because he could draw on it.

So sorry to hear. Love his books.

to hear the news about Tomie dePaola. I met him years ago in Florida at the Kindergarten conference. He allowed us to take pictures with him. He was fascinating to hear in person. May he RIP.

I literally cried when I heard about this today. I have a huge collection of his books and being half Italian (like he was) he held a special place in my heart. May he rest in peace.

Iím so sad to hear this. His birthday is in Sept like mine and one of his sisters shares my first name. I do an author study with my class every year. One of my students chose to write to him as her favorite author. He came to a bookstore in the town where I teach two years ago. He was such a sweet man.
