Name one thing you wish you were better at doing?

My answer is baking. It seems like a very intricate science and so much work

Learning new languages. I took French for two years in high school and 1 year in college and I am not proficient at all. I am amazed at people who are bilingual.

Directions. My DH refers to rooms in our house by their cardinal directions. I have lived in this home for 21 years and I have no idea which is the west room. And forget about telling me how to get somewhere or even worse, asking me for directions. Full on panic.

Wrapping gifts. I just don't have the patience for it. I can't cut a straight line, have a hard time 'eyeballing' measurements and then all the folding. Don't even get me started on my shortcomings with sticky tape. . DH is the gift wrapper in our partnership.

Drawing! Both my mom and my sister draw beautifully. My nephew is a professional graphic artist.

Somehow the drawing gene made sure to jump way over my head and has always stayed out of my reach. Luckily, computer graphics were there to save me time and time again!

Another person that wishes she could sing! Way back when cassette recorders were new I sang the Christmas song about chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Listening to it playback was the first time I realized I couldnít sing

I sing in the comfort of my car and when I was teaching I always sang Happy Birthday but made sure the door was closed and there were no other adults on the room. Second graders sang just as badly as me!

I would love to be able to dance! I love watching dance videos and I always buy tickets for the ballet and for every dance company that comes through town.

I have an ongoing joke with my 4th graders that I'm a brilliant dancer. When I challenge them to do the Floss with me, that's when the truth comes out...

I'm really having a hard time choosing. I feel like I don't have any "fun" talents. I have a friend who is a really good singer, so obviously karaoke night is really fun for her. She met a bunch of other really good singers and they go around to different karaoke nights around the city (pre-covid, of course). I always thought that sounded so fun.

I'd also like to be able to dance, and draw. I have this idea in the back of my mind that I'd like to write a children's book some day. I think I'm a decent writer, but so much of children's books is in the illustrations. I know, I could find someone else to do that part, but it would be so much easier if I could do it myself.

How far is a half mile? Who knows? Not me!
Don't tell me to head east because I have no clue where that is.
I have gotten lost using a GPS.

I cannot make a good cup of coffee. I don't drink coffee but guests like to have it. I have been shown a zillion times, people have stood over me as I follow their very explicit directions and the coffee turns out to be horrible. Nobody can understand it. Now I make guests make their own coffee.

patience is not my virtue
Old 08-08-2020, 10:03 PM
  #39

Being patient with adults. I am not patient with anyone over the age of 20 if they are acting a fool. And I also am not ever going to patiently wait in line anywhere. I'm also not patient enough to like slow cooker meals. I can drive at the speed limit, but I will be impatient about it and slowly the car will gather speed until I suddenly realize I have a lead foot and then I'll slow down until the cycle repeats.

But I can be very patient with kids and teenagers and even young adults just starting off. Over the age of 24? They should know better. There comes a time in life when a person has to stop acting like a whiney baby. But I usually don't say anything to them. I just think it. I think it hard enough to show on my face, apparently. One eyebrow goes up, one eyelid starts to twitch. I start shaking my foot like I'm going to kick someone.

I noticed a couple others who mentioned dancing, and that's my weakness too.

While reading through these responses and thinking about talents and interests of people I know (or have known), it makes me wonder if Howard Gardner is really on to something with his Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

The top five are:

1. Parallel parking (I am 48 years old have never done it)
2. Directionally challenged (not a gene I inherited from my grandma. It was even mentioned at her funeral how good she was at directions.)
3. Sewing.
4. Drawing
5. Decorating (I have given up on this one. I would never be hired by HGTV)

I can't do any sport that involves balls being hit with a bat or racket.
I cannot take good pictures with my phone or camera.
I have no clue how to get songs on my iPhone.
I cannot back into a parking spot unless there are 4 blank spaces in both sides.
I cannot file but I make good piles.
