my husband wants to have me committed

so far this summer, i have built a mail sorter, bought 6 huge bean bang chairs, made foam board bulletin boards to hang above my windows, and worked a long time creating my own copy of every everyday math game.

so, i decided i would like a class pet. the problem is my classroom can sometimes reach 95 degrees, so even some fish have been known to boil to death in certain classrooms. then it dawned on me how cool hermit crabs would be! but the little hermit crab huts they make are tiny. SOOOOOO, i headed to home depot, and 37 dollars later, i am prepared to build a hermit hut that is 24 x 12 x 18 inches. lol.

I AM SOOOOOOOO EXCITED!

Hermit Crabs

Take it from someone who knows. Don't let your room get too cold in the winter. My first year teaching I had hermit crabs and I didn't know they turned the heaters off over the weekend(I live in FL- so who knew it would get too cold). When I came back to school after a long weekend, there was a horrible stench in my class. The crabs had crawled out of their shells and died. I have not had a class pet since!

on the cold weekends i'll take them home in a mini-cage. but during the week, the boiler is boiling. actually, the fish i spoke of that boiled to death -- it happened in winter.

oh, i love the old schools.

I'm really proud for you!

I wanted to ask where you purchased your bean bags? I've looked several places, but don't really want to pay $20 each. I have one that my daughter had, but would like one more.

Let us know what else you accomplish!

pictures as you accomplish new things. My daughter currently has Hermit crabs in her room (she's 11) and they are pretty fun to watch. They love to climb so be sure to put something in there for that activity. We couldn't find one on one morning and looked in the top of the tree to find it just sitting up there. Pretty cool. Please post more picts as you get them. Your room is very neat. I love how organized your book area is. And I LOVE your bar graph!

strawberry_k5 -- my school is old and has no A/C. there are grates over the windows, and they only open about 9 inches. it's a HOOT!

jbug -- i got my bean bags at big lots (for 12 bucks) and Aldi (for 15). they are the vinyl kind, but i prefer those because i'm a germiphobe, and need to be able to wipe things down.

doden -- my entire cage is going to be out of a small chicken wire and a wood frame. only the bottom will be solid. i can't wait. that reminds me...i need to charge the drill. tomorrow will be either a really fun, or frustrating day.

How fun! I have so many projects floating around in my head that I can't even figure out where to begin...but then I remember that I have three kids and go clean up their mess.

hermit crabs as a pet

hi there I had hermit crabs last year. They are living in my living room right now. Remember to keep a bottle of water that you can mist them with. It needs to be humid. I got a temperture and humid scale at petsmart.

Hermit Crab Cage... a.k.a. "Crabitat"
Old 07-16-2008, 03:00 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #24

okay, i was really busy working on it today. it is not totally done, and i may end up putting plexi glass around three side of it, if i find that my room isn't as humid as i think it is.

we live in such a small apartment that i made this on the dining room table. i was scared to scratch the surface, i whipped out my old college comforter to cushion. lol.

here are pics of my day with the cage:
