Best method to keep name tags on desks

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Just looking for some effective ways to keep those darn name tags on the desk. I thought about using magnets and have them on the front but when my desks are in pods you won't be able to see them. I know they sell the slip covers but I've already spent a good chunk of change this year and the school year hasn't even started. I thought about using velcro. Has any one done this???? Does it leave behind a lot of stinkiness???

I used to use clear packing tap over the top. But then at the end of the year I had the stickiness and it was a pain to peel off ... etc. Then I found these awesom self adhesive desk plates from Really Good Stuff! I used them for the first time last year. They worked so great! Not a single problem with kids trying to peel them off. When we pulled them off at the end of the year they came off nice and clean with no residue!

I also use the vinyl desk sleeves. In my opinion it's worth the money! I have used them for 3 yrs. and am ready to buy them for this year too. They are so convenient!

and love it. This will be my third year using velcro and I was surprised that the kids didn't really play with it like I thought they might. When they did, I just took their name tag away for a short time. They eventually learned their lesson.

I leave the velcro on year after year and just replace what needs to be replaced each year (so I'm not sure about stickiness left from it). I also laminate the tags first before velcroing them on.

I hated taping name tags on the desk. The kids peeling that tape drove me nuts!

Last year, I ran out of packing tape and used contact paper. It was wonderful! Very smooth and you can reposition it without worrying about tearing.

I don't stick them to the desks....

I laminate my regular nametags I buy at the teacher store onto oaktag and then simply set them on their desks. The children put them in their desk at the end of the day. Eventually when we all know each other, we simply use them as basal bookmarks. I just tell a sub to ask for them on the desks if needed in the future. Or, if the children need to see them for the modeled cursive of their names, they pull them out then. My kids really didn't play with them; if they did, like a pp poster said, I just took it or asked them to put it in the desk. They lasted all year for us!

I second the contact paper. I have used it for years! UT, this past year I tried to laminate and use double sided tape - FAIL!

I give a prize to the kids who still have name tag intact and haven't picked at the paper when we break for Christmas and another chance at the end of the year. I am always making a big deal of "perfect" looking name tags - it works and I'll be doing it again this year.

What a great way to stop kids from picking at their name tags!

I laminate them and then use velcro. That way the kids can switch desks every six weeks and the kids just take the name tag to the new desk. There is no desk moving for you!

Thank you all for the responses. I think this year I am going to use the velcro and next year invest in the sleeves when I get my budget. I think if I buy one more thing my husband is going to flip . First year of marriage so he hasn't quit grown use to beginning of the school year shopping or year round for that matter. Bless his heart, he is doing a better job than I thought. I even got him to cut out laminating the other evening!!!

Love the velcro idea......Last year I laminated the tags BUT made the BIG mistake of taping them down with clear packing tape.....what a sticky mess that made. I definetly will use the "prize" incentive for those who still have their name tags at the end of the year.

I also use velcro dots (bought at the dollar store). It makes desk changes so easy. Students just take off their name tags & move it to the new spot.

They're pretty easy to take off (I have to move classrooms each year so I have to buy them year after year).

I like this idea! Is it hard to get off at the end of the year?
I just may try this. For me, the tape and even the plastic sleeves didn't work.

I laminate mine and then use 2 small pieces of double sided tape- they really stay on pretty well! And it doesn't make the desk really sticky at all when they come off..

Stick them to chairs instead!
Old 08-04-2011, 05:02 PM

I laminate them and stick them to the back of their chairs instead. The students already know who they are, and often there are papers on desks that cover up the name tags, so they get stuck to the backs of their chars. Super easy to remove at the end of the year, and they are all still looking neat since there really isn't a chance to pick at them.

I have used contact paper, velcro, book tape, sleeves, and rolls of masking tape. The best luck I had was with the sleeves, but I've only used them once because they're too expensive. This last year, I told my kids that whoever didn't have a messy nametag at the end of each quarter could get a prize from the prize box. Yes, I know it's a bribe, but it worked for all but 2 kids.

I used velcro one year to put pencil trays on the student's desks. It was a nightmare to get off at the end of the year!! The stickiness was terrible.

Name tags on backs of chairs

I like the idea of laminating the name tags and using Velcro to adhere them.
However, I think sticking them out of their view on the chair backs is counter productive for students who are just learning to write or spell their names and need to see their tags to help them.

For those of you who use rubber cement, does it adhere to nametags that are laminated?
