I'm planning to hold a family math night for kids and parents in grades 1 & 2. (approx. 100 students). I'm looking for ideas on what the parents and kids can do together. Has anyone done this and have suggestions on how to structure the evening?

and we based it on our math program when it was new to everyone. We use Pearson Investigations which is exploratory-based so there are a lot of games. We had the kids teach some of the games to the parents so they played them together. Many of the games are sent home for homework during the year. Is there anything unique about your math program that you would want to explain to the parents? You could start with an explanation and then the kids take over with the games.

Ideas to complete with an adult:
Play a Math game (see below)
Make a take home Math game
distance of a cotton ball shot put from a start line,
estimate how many drops of water will fit on a penny and test,
do a pattern block logic activity,
a Math fact game,
an M & M graph,
a fruit-loop pattern bracelet
an online computer game--you could select one here, for example, http://www.curriculumsupport.educati.../children.html

Have a check list to check off as they do an activity.(The sheet should make a small comment about the math skill they are doing.)

Math game with parent:
Partners play the Digit Game with a set of number cards 0 to 9. 4 cards of each number.

Directions:

The deck is shuffled and placed number-side down between the partners.

Each player draws 2 cards from the deck and uses them to make the


largest 2 digit number . The player with the larger number takes all 4 cards.

The game is over when all of the cards have been used.

The player with more cards wins.

We tried to do something for each of the strands.

In addition to games, we had an estimation station, a graphing station, a geometric bubble station, and a measuring station where they made cake in a cup.

We also included technology as our students had been working on coding and shared this with parents.
