Hey guys.. this is my first year as a fourth grade teacher and am really wanting to get my kiddos involved and loving writing. I have been having them write in their journals daily and have been starting a short story, but really would like to know what you all have your kids work on during writing time. Just let me know! I am open to any and all ideas. Thanks.

I think Writing Workshop is the only way to go! The problem with journals is that we're not really teaching them anything about being a better writer. There are lots of resources out there to help with ideas for teaching. I like Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing, Grades 4-6 from IRA (reading.org) because there are complete units for informational and persuasive writing (important for CCSS) - with samples included - and also ideas for preparing kids for test writing.
