Hi all ESL teachers,

I have had a horrible time finding quality professional development. My district isn't doing a great job (as I'm the only elementary and full-time ESL teacher).

I've found the TESOL Professional Organization. Does anyone belong? Thoughts about whether it is worth the cost?

You might want to see if there is a local or state affiliate. I know there is a CATESOL for California. You might do a search for them and their support info.

You may want to look into SIOP support--their books include Making Content Compressible for (a variety of titles go here: secondary, elementary, English Language Learners).

Having been President and very active in my state affiliate, I would have to say, yes it it a good idea to join your state affilitae of TESOL. Thye have yearly large state conferences and many have smaller one through out the state and the year. It is wonder to network and to talk to other ESL teachers and to alos find out about state (and nataional) policies. ESL teachers tend to be very isolated since they are many times the only one in a school or distict and other people just do not undersatna the issues.. If you twll me your state I can find out your affiliate.

PanchaO,

I live in Kansas. I'm not sure that the affiliate in Kansas is active...the website lists 2008 as the last "update"

Thanks for your help. It's been a difficult transition from 3rd to ESL.
