Daily 5 & Cafe in resource room

I am new to the Daily 5 and Cafe. I teach 3rd & 4th graders in a resource room. I normally have 4-6 students for 45 - 60 min. at a time. Any ideas about scheduling and /or which parts of these 2 books would best fit into a resource room?

I'm wanting to use the Daily 5/CAFE format in a resource room, too. I'd love to hear suggestions.

I would love to use the Daily 5 in my room, but I have to provide direct instruction based on IEP goals during the time students are with me. Any time they spend in centers isn't direct instruction so it won't work for my room.

So are kids not allowed to read to self because that's not direct instruction? ARe they not allowed to practice the skills? So you have to be explicitly teaching the entire time they are with you?

Direct instruction

Typically, students can work independently on activities/assignments that correspond to the lesson taught to practice skills. Ex: after a SRA reading mastery lesson, students would independently complete the worksheet. I do have students read independently, but the majority of the time is direct instruction. Some students are only with me for 30-60 minutes while others are with me for up to 2 hours (different times during the day) and direct instruction lessons take on average 30-60 minutes to teach...leaving little time for other independent work.
