I have a 3rd grader who is reading well below grade level. What would be the best approach to teaching him to read? He's a fairly bright little boy with excellent comprehension skills when he is read to...he just struggles greatly with decoding and sight vocabulary. I need to get him reading!!

Try using books on cd while he follows with his own copy. My own son loved that.

Find his level of phonics and start there. I love using Readinga-z for additional stories. It also has decent lessons to tie into the books.

Usually kids who are reading quite low (1st grade level in 3rd grade), kids here are taught PAF. (Preventing Academic Failure) It's a step-by-step phonics program.
