Does anyone have any ideas for the first day of art for kindergarten and first day???

Two read-aloud ideas:

1. Read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds about a little girl who says she can't draw. She can, however, draw a dot and becomes, in the words of another little boy, a great artist. Follow up by letting students create dot art.

2. Read Harold and the Purple Crayon. Then, on an overhead, draw simple line drawings and talk about what you are drawing as you go. Follow up by letting students use purple crayons to create their own picture stories. I've also seen teachers let students draw on the overhead and tell their stories to a small group of students.
