History Channel - Sahara

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Last night - Thursday, August 27 - The History Channel had a two hour long program on the Sahara Desert - basically a history of north Africa. It was excellent.

For those of you teaching anything to do with the Sahara, Mansa Musa, the Tuareg, the Berbers, Timbuktou, the caravan roads, etc., if this is available for purchase, or if it repeats and you can record it, various segments would be awesome supplements to teaching units.

I've been looking for something, anything on Northern/western Africa for years. I'll have to check this out. I really only cover up to Mansa Musa but even to have something on him will be a huge improvement.

They did mention that they sell their programs, thought they didn't say that one in particular. The program led up to the Mansa Musa era with great details and pictures of the area, the expansion of the Romans into the area and how the Islamic groups penetrated northern Africa - good maps too. Then discussed in pretty good detail the development of the camel caravan routes, the piracy along them, and then Mansa Musa, including his trip to Arabian peninsula, again with lots of maps. It would be worthwhile to purchase it, but I'd wait to see if it repeats - which it probably will.

I just checked the History channel's web site and the Sahara video is on sale, marked down to $19.99. I'm going to purchase it as it is visually awesome and covers so much I'd like to see it again.
