It's only 10:30 right now, but let's not stand on formality and start right away--kind of a brunch that goes into dinner and all that!! HAPPY RETIREMENT!!
To all those new retirees, congrats!

Do, please, let us know who you are!

Also, cheers to all of us who have been retired
*A year
*2
*3
or more. How about we take roll call of all of us? I have been retired for a year. LURVE it.

Would anyone, whether newly retired or having been retired for awhile--like to share a bit about it so far?

Congratulations, retired teachers! Welcome to the happiest board on PT. Your first assignment is to "fix" your alarm clock. Then notice how Sunday evenings feel. AMAZING!

I retired last June, and I'm loving the freedom! For the first time in a very long while, I can live life on MY terms, rather than someone else's.

Congratulations to those who have just retired (or are about to retire in the near future).

The best word of advice a good friend of mine gave me:

Once you are retired, many people will think you have lots of time available to give to various causes and activities. You'll be asked to be on boards, to volunteer for children's programs, to help with events, to join various clubs...the list goes on and on.

Practice these words in the mirror so that you can say them in honesty and truth:

"I'll have to think about that." (Translation: "We'll see." At least, this was my mom's way of buying time when she didn't want to say "Absolutely not", but was not ready to say "Yes, of course!")

and

"I'm sorry, that won't work for me." (Translation: " No! In fact, hell, no!")

I still have trouble with the word "no"--but these two responses have been very helpful to me!

This IS a great place to be!! I've been retired a week, and I really thought i wouldn't feel any different until August. I believe, though, that I'm feeling different already! Here's how...

-No more stress of feeling like I should be doing MORE AND MORE AND MORE!
-No more feeling like I have to spend so much of my summer looking for better and bigger ideas and lesson plans!
-No more feeling like I'd better enjoy this "freedom", because it's coming to an end in just a few, short weeks!
-No more feeling anxious (already) about the coming school year because I know they are adding the current behavior problems to MY room!
-No more going to the store and spending my money on things for my students and classroom!
-No more educational emails cluttering up my phone!

I think I could go on and on and on, and I'm sure you understand how my feelings have changed in just a short time! I haven't "calmed down" yet from the current school year, but I will. I will then realize how lucky I am to be retired!!

Thanks so much for this day to celebrate our "freedom". Thank you for having a board on PT, so I can continue to come to one of my favorite places! (I can't begin to tell you how many wonderful ideas I've gotten from this great site over the past years or how many, many hours I've spent here!!)

I'm going to love these endless summers!

Congrats to all the retired newbies!
This month celebrates my second year of retirement. At first, not having an super scheduled day felt weird. But now, I no longer am a slave to the clock. Freedom to choose is wonderful. I am LTD - living the dream.

Welcome to your new life. You are now free to do or not do whatever makes you happy. I have been retired one year, and it has been great. It has amazed me how much money that I have saved (gas money, wedding showers, baby showers, and my favorite buying cokes and other supplies for the spring festivals). 🏖

Congratulations to the new retirees! I retired January 1st and am calmer and happier than I have been in years. I love being able to decide how I spend my time. I love Sunday evenings now that I don't have to return to school on Mondays.

Enjoy this new phase of your life, and do something fun to celebrate.

and I still catch myself looking at teachng ideas on pinterest. I have unsubscribed to many of the educational emails that I received. I am a little worried about not getting my "kid fix" so I might need to substitute this coming year which would help pay my health insurance anyway. I also find myself just sitting around a lot which is so unlike me so I am going to have to come up with a schedule but it can be very flexible. I am looking forward to the friendships on this site to help fill the void from the friends I had at work. I'm sure that I will find enough to keep busy, but it's going to take awhile to transfer school business to my choice business.

Congratulations to all the other retirees and those that have been enjoying it for a year or more.

I am loving retirement. I do sub and did a couple of long terms. Probably won't do that again unless they make some changes in their policies. It was a good thing to sub, though as my house has been in remodeling mode, outside and in, for a year now. The past 4 months I have lived in my basement which is partially finished.

My favorite thing about retirement, even when subbing, is to just get up and go. I make myself unavailable on the sub system so I don't get those 5:30 a.m. phone calls, pack a bag, and go. Sometimes I just have a little staycation.

Congratulations to all those who are newly retired.

Today, June 10...I am retired five years. However, three years ago, I began working as an interventionist in my previous school. I refer to my retirement as "part time."

Interventioning is the perfect part time job for a retired teacher. I get my "kid fix," earn extra money, work with groups of one to four, make more money in 4.5 hours a day than I would if I subbed for 8 hours, and spend time with wonderful students/friends on staff.

There is nothing not to like about retirement!

I've been retired 3 years. As others have said, retirement is awesome!--Even the not-so-great stuff that life throws at you (maybe caring for a family member or recovering from surgery, etc.) is somehow made so much easier because the tremendous weight of a teaching career is no longer on your shoulders....Congrats to all the new retirees! And congrats to all of us "old retirees" also. We're still celebrating!

This is my four year anniversary. I have loved EVERY day of retirement!

The best parts are being the master of my time schedule and traveling, having time to spend with the grandkids and developing into an author!

There is so much in the world besides teaching! (which was wonderfu)

Ground Hog Day!
Old 06-10-2016, 07:47 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #30

Thursday I was manning the hockey shot station at Field Day. One of my old team members came up to me and said, "I bet you never thought you would be doing FIELD DAY again!!!" I subbed the last 8 days of school for 1st grade class (The class from HELL) And both of us thought of the movie "Ground Hog Day". For 8 days I set my alarm and woke up at 5:45 am, 15 minutes before the alarm went off, got up, took a shower, dressed in the outfit I put in the bathroom because DH was sleeping. Made coffee, made lunch, watched the news, drove to school by 7:15 and did what I have always done for the the 40 years I was a teacher. But WAIT! I'm retired!! It was a difficult 8 days, but I DID IT! It was like running a marathon, climbing the Grand Teton, winning a NOBEL Prize. It was a HUGE challenge, but I did it! i know it went well, but I experienced a HIGH level of stress. I am taking a leave of absence from subbing for the next year!! And I am happy to celebrate with you wonderful retirees who are joining this group!! This is my 4th year anniversary! I said I would NEVER sub when I retired, but in my 4th year I needed my "kid fix". Just enjoy your new found freedom. YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE RETIREMENT!!!!!!

How long?
Old 06-11-2016, 05:37 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #31

Almost 15 months. I've accomplished more in these 15 months than I did my last 3 years teaching.

I've wrote a book, wrote for a webpage and got paid for it, grew tomatoes and cilantro, helped out teaching English at IKEA (did I mention the free food?), taught magic to local kids, performed magic at children hospitals, relaxed, swam a lot and am in better shape than last year, entertained friends who were visiting, planning to present a topic at a conference,

I have happily retired for 2 years now. It is awesome. I haven't missed the stress at all.
It was difficult to turn off the school switch at first, but I don't even think about now and if I do I just say a prayer of thankfulness that I am home and loving it.

Congratulations and welcome to the board all newbies.

for all of us "retirees in the making" who lurk with vigor on this highly qualified board. . .We marvel at all the newly and veteran retirees who will be our beacon of hope and will guide us to. . ,.

--Explicit motivational strategies that address retirees specific strengths and no weaknesses

--Coordinated vacations with or without proper sequencing

--Ample practice opportunities in relaxation and rejuvenation

--Ideally, the design would also involve:
--Targeted, but not necessarily scientifically based, and highly qualified strategies for our independent reading time as desired and not necessarily needed.
--The allocation of time, including a protected, uninterrupted block of time for reawakening our inner souls of more than 90 minutes per day
--the absence of measuring progress
--the love of learning at our own time, place, and speed.

All these requirements may sound daunting to you as a former teacher, but remember that Retirement First is a state funded program for all the education warriors who fought tirelessly for the love of learning and now it's your turn to :

RETIRE LIKE A CHAMPION. . .RETIRE LIKE A CHAMPION. . . RETIRE LIKE A CHAMPION

Been retired for three years.
The time has flown by too quickly.
Would not have life any other way.
Adjustments are necessary.
Appreciate the gift of early retirement.
Give back to others in some way.
Introspection is key to begin your journey.
Enjoy the ride.
Congratulations for your incredible accomplishments!

Congrats to the newly retired members of our group! I've been retired almost 2 years now but do some subbing. I think Sunday evenings are my favorite part although it's hard to pick just one thing as a fav!

luvtulearn, that was a hilarious post! I loved your use of teaching buzzwords and jargon to describe the goals and objectives of retirement.

Congratulations to all the new retirees. You will love it even if you still have some lingering doubts. You will adjusted pretty quickly. This is my 5th (!!!!!!!!) year of retirement and every day I think how lucky I am to be able to be retired.

Heading to the backyard pool with the grands in a couple of minutes, so I stopped by. Retired one year. How did I work full time and do everything? I spend lots of time with my grandkids. I'm with the ones who live 3 hours away now. Been here since Friday. I go home tomorrow and then help with the 3 who live close by, as their dad has a 4 day training out of state. They are hosting a birthday party for all the June and July birthdays...and there are a lot! Even the NJ KIDS will be there. So I will help get the house ready. After that, travelling to NJ. I really am busier now than before. And loving nearly every second.

Officially done with year 2 of retirement. The first year brought several unexpected health issues for me so I spent lots of time with rehab. Year 2 was better health wise and with finding activities to enjoy. I can't believe how irritated I get when something upsets my relaxation routine. I'm am enjoying life and don't miss the stress of it all. I do miss certain activities and people and keep reminding myself that some of those people are gone from my school now and many of those activities have changed. I am appreciating health now more than ever.

Congratulations, Class of 2016!!
I graduated in the class of '13. I can scarcely believe it's been three years of almost, endless summer for me.
Occasionally I sub and get my kid fix. I am always so happy to leave the classroom and be retired again. Enjoy the journey ahead!
