Ongoing DCFS investigations

I've been hearing a lot about the fear of/for people who are stuck at home with their abusers. Our Governor (Pritzker-IL) issued a great statement about resources for food, housing, childcare and an 800 number for adults who are in an abusive situation.

Here's something that's been weighing heavily on my mind lately: What about all the ongoing DCFS investigations for kids that teachers, neighbors, friends, etc have called in? Are they still investigating? Have they put them on hold and left the students in even more danger? Most of the time, teachers are the ones who notice and call in concerns about child abuse (because we see them the most).

What's happening to these poor kids who are home 24/7 with their abusers? And now these abusers are even more stressed because they're either out of work, working from home AND trying to homeschool (another reason to not go crazy with the work) or they're an essential worker. Regardless, they're probably taking it out on the kids.

I know there's really nothing we can do, but it's just something I've been contemplating.

I know. It's been on my mind a LOT lately. Breaks my heart!!!

These children have no way of receiving help or of anyone even knowing it is happening!

I am also concerned about this for those currently in this situation and those who may become victims due to the stress of the times.

I read today that DCFS calls are down 45 percent since school has been out. Teachers make up the majority of calls they get.

I contacted our social workers about a number for emergency respite for some of my families. No one seems sure that those services are available right now.

Reduced services here. But the foodservice staff has been advised to look for signs when parents or kids come on for the free food

I have 3 that I am terrified for. 2 have been coming for lunches and the principal and food service have been keeping an eye out. The 3rd has been checked on a couple of times.

I have been so very concerned about this.

Law enforcement has been in danger as well.
The day after our state went to shelter in place, the husband of a former student was killed in a high speed chase incident. He was a state patrol officer who was putting out spike strips and the driver intentionally hit him. That night there was also a deputy in a neighboring county who was involved in a shooting incident.

There are some collateral consequences of all the corona virus restrictions.

I know it's going to get worse before it gets better; all of it. The numbers have to go up before they go down. People are crabby and on edge and they're on a short fuse so the effect is more fights, more abuse (adults and kids), and more assaults on first responders.

I have friends who work for child protective services and have been told they are essential workers.

I know that Illinois DCFS caseworkers are still keeping in touch with foster kids, kids in group homes, etc. I believe they are not going in person (except in an emergency situation), but checking via phone, Skype, etc.

You are correct--this is a risky time for some kids.
