Do you have any teacher books that have easy to use stuff for those kids that finish early? I have lows and highs this year and it is driving me crazy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How about task cards? I have downloaded a ton from this website.

Also, I make themed coloring books for my kids to work on. We have had two so far...the first involved CA state things, since I teach CA history. The second one was a figure of speech coloring book. It still sticks with academics, but it keeps them busy and it is fun. Our next one will be California Indians.

Kids can also read when they finish. That is always an option in my room and is used most of the time.

I have a "When You're Done" poster on the wall. The kids know when they're done, to refrain from announcing it and to choose something on the poster. In the beginning as they're "in training" and someone forgets and announces, "I'm done!" I just point to the poster. It has things such as independent reading, practice multiplication facts (I have a basket of flashcards & fact wrap-ups) write a letter, free writing in journal, memorize a poem (we have an annual poetry recital) complete make up work, challenge sheets and I can't remember what else. Anyway, it works very well in our room.

I teach using a workshop approach, so for most of the day my students can't be "done". During reading workshop, everyone's reading or responding in their journals. During writing workshop, everyone's writing. During math workshop, children can select an activity if they finish their work. They can choose between math facts practice using flashcards, self-correcting logic puzzles like Rush Hour, tangrams, Sudoku and chess.

I have a "When I'm Done I Can..." pocket chart that I can place different things written in dry erase marker on laminated sentence strips. Right now it says...
1. Finish any unfinished work.
2. Read silently.
3. Work on brainteasers. (These are laminated practice worksheets that are "fun" worksheets)
4. Work on mastery club. (You can find the details of this online, but my fourth graders LOVE it.)

Later on I will add things like centers, buddy read, etc...
