Can anyone offer advice for beginning this in a upper level grade? I can't see my students needing listening to reading as much. I wonder if I'll only incorporate 3 of the five choices. Word work, read to self, and writing. Is this what other teachers of upper grades do?

I did see on the Sisters' paid site that they recommended upper grades do only 3 choices -

Read to Self, Read to Someone and Work on Writing.

I would think that word work in the upper grades would consist of vocabulary work and spelling work. I'm planning on using it that way.

and I will be doing the main 3---with writing even more intensive at a later time in the day working on that skill and process writing and then the word work will be done even later in the day to reinforce the spelling/grammar portion.

This is my first year doing this too. My plan is to do Read to Self everyday, then word work, Read to Someone, writing ( more of a response to literature), and Listen to Reading ( once a week listen to the main selection from the basal on tape). The only part I will be sure to do is read to self everyday. The others will be a few times a week.

That's my plan. Then again I just today introduced the first step in D5. Things my be changed as I move along.

My plan is to do read to self, word work, and writing everday. I'm using Lucy Calkins units of study for read to self and writing. My word work is coming from making words. I fell like I'm running a lot of programs, but to me the Daily 5 is about establishing good habits and making a point to include at least these 3 big things into my day to have a well rounded literacy program.
