Kids! Please please oh please please read the directions. They're not there just to take up space on a paper; they serve a purpose. I even gave some hints before making copies. Did they bother to read those hints? Of course not!

My kids looked at me today like I had three heads when they realized they had ALL of their answers wrong because they didn't read; they just went to work first.

This is an oldie but goodie. There are a number of them easily available online. Pass it out FACEDOWN, tell them to begin, stand back and enjoy yourself!

You are being SO silly! Why waste your time typing all those directions if they don't need them? Make yourself another cup of coffee/tea instead!

It's maddening, isn't it?

One of my texts has fabulous worksheets that cover a wide range of skills. Every one of them has a "before you read" section which gives background knowledge, example(s) of skill being covered and almost always the answer to one question. Every time I assign one, I remind the kids that the "before you read" is to be read BEFORE you read...do they?

I guess I'm in the "silly teacher" boat, too!

I ended up having to pull a class to the carpet to get step by step (get, do, get, do) for an activity today. I showed them the first step. Showed them a second time. Showed the place on the screen with the direction written on it (shows up on each students' screen), and still half the class couldn't do it.

Kids. Directions.

I do an exit slip every Friday and remind the kids to read the directions first. In the directions is a silly direction to write their favorite color, movie, candy, etc in the upper right hand corner. Those that do get a piece of candy. Some kids figure it out and others go all freaking year (no joke) trying to figure out how their classmates got candy.
