teamed = our group will have a 3 blocks, one for ELA, math, and the third is a half block for each science and a half for social studies. the ss and sci teachers are actually on two teams

We are self-contained, although I will split a contract 50/50 this year am/pm so it is similar to departmentalized. I will teach p.m.; math, science, writing, and p.e. She will teach reading and social studies in the a.m. Some grade levels at our school are more departmentalized for science and social studies, depends on the team.

There are 5 fourth grade teachers and we are all self contained. Last year we ability grouped our students for math and writing. This worked well, but I've always been interested in how others schools teach.

2 teams - I will teach reading and science for my team. Reading every day and science 2 days for each class on the team. I have been teaching 3rd and 2nd grade for the last 23 years and this year I will be back in 4th grade (not by my choice) so it will be an interesting year for me especially since it will most likely be my last year teaching.

self-contained but we regroup in lower grades for universal access/intervention for ELA by ability levels, and regroup by levels for ELD. Upper grades regroup by level for ELA and universal access combined, and ELD.

I was confused, because our team of teachers is always called the grade level team.. Now I see you meant, team teaching?

We are self contained, but switch for math. We also switch for reading interventions for 1/2 an hour. The 4 4th grade teachers, special ed, Title 1 and volunteers each take small groups and work on reading concepts that each groups need. We have talked about team teaching, but we are getting new admin. this year so we are going to see how things go this year. I team taught in the past and loved it. We taught our own math and reading and spelling. I taught English and social studies, my partner taught Science and computers. That worked well too.

We are self contained and LOVE it that way. There is one group of teachers than team teaches for LA and Math (3rd grade) but no other grade level wants to do it this way. I am grateful that, so far, our administration allows teams to have some choice and flexibility in this.

I taught in a departmentalized 5th grade last year and hated it. We had 4 teachers: 1 math, 1 lang./writing, 1 science, 1 social studies. We all taught reading to our homeroom. We had 1 hour for reading in the morning, and 45 minute blocks for the other subjects. I think that 45 minutes is no where near enough time for math and a little too much time for science and social studies. It always felt so rushed and was unfair to the teachers who were teaching ALL of the math and language, while others had less accountability for science and social studies. I got a bit bored teaching the same lesson 4 times a day and missed the other subjects. There was little to no flexibility because the schedule was so rigid and we would have to make up a whole new schedule for those inevitable pep rallys, picture days, etc. which always confused the students. I felt like I didn't have as strong of a personal connection to my students either because they were never in my room for a long period of time. Not to say it was all bad, it has its advantages, such as planning for 2 subjects instead of 5, etc. Many of the teachers liked it, and some didn't. For me it was just too much like middle school and a little too chaotic.

This year I transferred to a new school and now I have a self-contained classroom. I like the fact that I can have my own schedule and spend as much time or as little time as I want on certain subjects and can tailor it to my preferences. I also feel like I am going to be a lot more consistent with classroom management because I will have the same students all day and they won't be floating all over the building. My team and I have discussed doing ability grouping in math and rotating for a math block, which I think will be beneficial. I am very excited to have more control over my day and to fit things to my style a bit more.

We're teamed with 3 blocks similar to aggiemomx2, but when we have more students we'll have four teachers instead of three. With four teachers, we're teamed with 2 blocks; one of us teaches science/ELA and the other teaches math/ss.

for me at least...

I love team teaching and don't think I could handle 4th grade without it! Last year I taught social studies while one of my teammates taught math and the other science. We all taught our own language arts. This year we are adding a fourth teacher who will be teaching language arts. We thought about this a lot and figured out a way where if we had 4 switches our lowest level readers could get about an hour and 45 minutes of language arts, with three or four teachers (reg. ed teacher, spec ed teacher, ELL teacher). We are so excited to see how it all works out!!

I teach math and science. All Math teachers plan one day a week together, same for most other subjects! All teams split subjects the same, so planning never conflicts. We love it. You meet that one session, plan, one person types, one copies, etc. and at least a framework is ready for the following week(s). This also allows us to bounce ideas off each other as to how we like to teach a skill. We've been doing this for a few years now and I could not imagine going back. The only downfall is I feel I do not get to see my other colleagues (except my partner) as much because I do not plan those subjects (ex. reading, english, etc) with them. So, I now plan a "meet and eat" where we meet on one planning period a month. We bring finger foods, pray together, and discuss our lives!! We love it!!

But I am the school wide science and math coach and I team teach with the school wide language coach. This allows us to spend half a day coaching. But the other two 4th grade teachers are self contained. Our fifth grade is self contained as well. It is only in 6th that they departmentalized. We are a K-8 school.

This will be my first year in 4th grade (after 11 in 5th and 5 in 3rd). We have to shuffle kids between two classes for math only so that one class will have the lower kids and the math assistant. (Less assistants to go around due to budget cuts!)

Most of the years though, I have been totally self-contained.
