I feel like I am constantly shushing my students all day. I let them talk different periods throughout the day so it's not like they have to sit there quiet all day. But yet they can't usually stop talking to save their lives. Although there are quite a few who are nice and quiet , it's just the talkers make it seem like it's the whole class.

I will bet I "shush" 20 times a day.

Only 20?

If I had to guess it would be something like, 7,986 times... an hour.

I know how you feel! I swear I am telling my kids to be quiet so many times during the day. I know it's unrealistic to expect kids to be quiet all day long but there are certain times they do need to stop talking (tests, I'm giving directions, announcements, etc.) but they just want to keep chatting. I actually read something not too long ago that said students are talking a lot more these days because of the instant gratification they get from smartphones and video games and other things. They're pretty much incapable of sitting quietly for more than a few seconds now. I can definitely see this happening.

And like you, I do have a decent amount who are capable of being quiet when they need to be, but the talkers kind of ruin it.

So. Many. Times.

My daily life in a video clip.

Sometimes I use the noise I make at the dogs to make them stop whatever they are doing.

All. Day. Long. I am shushing them all the time. It's driving me crazy. I don't understand why they can't sit quietly for even a few seconds. Honestly, they seem to want to fill in every transition - opening a book? changing the site on the projector? handing out papers? - with the sound of their own voices! I'm glad to know I'm not alone.

Now that I am a specials teacher, it is fun for me to see the differences in classes. The ones who can't transition without having a party. The ones who talk and talk and talk and never stop. Doesn't matter what is happening. Some of it is teacher driven.

They definitely have gotten better since the beginning of the year. The worst ones are the older ones. 5th graders think they never have to listen. No, I take that back. They can listen and do when I pull them to the floor. When they are at their seats they are always talking. No matter what.

It is constant talking in my class this year! A few even talk to their pencils if no one is listening. I have little lizard and frog decorations on the walls and they will go over and talk to them! This is 4th grade! Not kindergarten! Exhausting.

Id actually take talking (which they also do), but I have 3-4 girls who scream at the top of their lungs when they get angry, get told no, or dont get their way. We have a lot of screaming and shrieking in my room. Its been a long year.

Haha. I think it's rare when a teacher doesn't have to shush a class.

I don't even keep track.

But like GreyhoundGirl, I'll take the talking over screaming.
I have one that screams at the top of his lungs, then runs and hides behind a table.
I had another one yesterday that kept hissing loudly and growling during independent reading.
