Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello PT,
I'm going from kindergarten to second grade. I hear 2nd is absolutely wonderful! I've subbed in the past and I know kiddos are really sweet in this age group.

My question is: Can anyone give me an idea/schedule of how to go about teaching all subjects, with our limited time and reading chapter books that need to be implemented?

Thank you in advance and hoping all of you are enjoying your summer!

I made that exact move midway through my career and loved it.

Keep in mind, 2nd graders are way more independent than Kinders, have more refined skills, and should have a more prescribed curriculum. So, you spend far less time teaching basic "school skills" and more time with curriculum.

My schedule went some thing like this:

8:30-9:00. General business and some form of movement for 10 minutes.
9:00-10:10. Readers workshop
10:10-10:30. Recess
10:30-11:45 math
11:45-12:25. Lunch
12:25-12:45ish chapter book read aloud
12:45-1:45 writers workshop
1:45-155 break in classroom
1:55-2:30 social studies or whatever else needed doing.
But of course the day rarely looked like this! We had at least one special every day.

How many chapter books do you read within the year?

I know my school only reads Charlotte's Webb. I plan to implement Magic Treehouse books also. Any other recommendations?

Thank you!

I loved reading out loud so we managed to do it pretty much every day.

These are the books I remember:
Keena Ford and the second grade mix up
The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane
Despereaux
Because of Winn Dixie
Flora and Ulysses ( I love Kate DiCamillo)
James and the Giant Peach
Crime Biters (about a boy who thinks his dog is a vampire. It's pretty funny)
The Just So stories by Rudyard Kipling

It just dawned on me...did you mean books you read to kids or books they read?

If it's chapter books the kids are reading: I taught Readers Workshop and everybody was reading different books until we got to the Series unit. Then there would be small groups (3-4 kids) in book clubs reading a series at their level.

We didn't read one book as a whole class.
