Chromebook vs tablet

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Our first grade is looking at buying new technology. Grades 2-5 already have chrome books. Kindergarten has tablets. Right now, we have 3 classroom laptops, and have access to a class set of laptops (not chrome books). We've been asked whether we want chrome books or tablets. On the one hand, they will need to know how to use chrome books next year, but our technology teacher can teach them how to use those next year. We can't type or print from a tablet, but we will still have access to our mobile lab. Tablets are easier for first graders to use and most of them already have tablets at home.
We're trying to deicide which one to get. Any thoughts?

When I taught first grade we used Chrome books for testing. All of my students needed to use a mouse. This might sound silly, but I would probably choose tablets if each Chrome book did not come with a mouse.

That doesn't sound silly at all.

That's one of the big things we had discussed. Thank you both for your responses.

I don't know all of the specifics since I honestly don't use them that much in my setting, but we switched from ipads to chromebooks this year and the teachers weren't happy. Apparently there is a whole lot more you can do with apps on an i pad. One of the reasons we switched is for stupid state testing- it's all electronic and kids weren't that familiar with using a keyboard previously. However, that's not a big factor in 1st grade. It also seems to me that the i pads were sturdier. For our primary kids they had them in giant rubber cases.

Our first grade kids use PCs in computer lab each week with tech teacher. They are comfortable with mouse and keyboard. Each Second grader gets chrome book to use in classroom with a mouse. They use daily for journal writing (google classroom) and math/phonics practice.

I gave my tablets to K teacher because they were such a pain to manage. Might have been better if they were iPads. They all use tablet apps at home so I donít feel they miss anything.

I still like my classroom PCs. Transition to chrome books is easy.
