DH and I are driving from Fort Myers to Key West in a few weeks. Is it worth it to drive on route 41 or should we just take 75 to route one? Iíve always wanted to take this drive. We have been to key west many times but have never driven across the keys to get there. I know there are a few retired PTers in Florida!

DH and I took highway 41 from Naples to Miami and enjoyed it a lot. We took our time, also took some narrow side roads that had bodies of water full of wildlife. This was a while back so I don't know if things changed after the hurricane(s). There were millions of all sorts of large birds in the trees and fish literally jumping out of the water, and alligators swimming towards me in a v-formation.

When you reach Rt. !, you will be by the Homestead Entrance to the Everglades National Park. It is well-worth a stop if you have never been. We went to the Homestead entrance on the way back from the Keys. We walked the Aningha Trail and saw many gators, even in the summer. We also drove to Flamingo and took the boat ride. We didn't see any wildlife when we went, but it was a relaxing ride and you never know. We also had time to go to go to the Shark Valley entrance to the park, and we took the tram ride. It was wonderful. The people on the left side of the tram saw more than we did, but we still got to see gators. The observation tower that we stopped at was cool, too. It was worth the extra cost. Before that, we stopped at the air boat ride that the National Park has as a concession. It was okay. We had a Groupon for it. We didn't see any wildlife, but enjoyed the ride. We were there in the summer though. The rangers told us that the winter into the spring is the best time to see wildlifein the park.
