I'm new to this, and have left my book at school. What should be the first trait I teach?

I'm starting with Ideas.

Ruth Culham lists Ideas first throughout her book, 6+1 Traits of Writing.

I think unit 1, week 1 in our basal lists Organization -- with no teacher instruction other than a rubric for assessment! A teacher who has no 6-Trait knowledge would have no clue!

I always begin with ideas regardless of what our basal says. Without ideas, you really don't have anything, .

froggy4,
I totally agree with you! What good will organization do until you've actually come up with lots of good ideas and written some things so then you can work on organization!!!!

Here's what I think about the basal. The publishers stuck 6-Traits in there as a selling point and didn't really care that people wouldn't know how to implement the traits. I love my basal . . . I love my basal . . .
