I presume that there is a lot more grading/checking papers in second grade (tests, quizzes, center work, etc.) However, do any of you have a shortcut or special system not to take up a lot of our time?

Choose judiciously what to grade. Tests, yes. I never gave quizzes. Homework and center work: flip through it and put a check mark at the top.

Writing...depends on your program. We had a rubric for writers workshop.

regards to the load of grading a ton of more papers vs. in kindergarten? And which papers to send home vs. the ones to just give in school for practice and not send home. Hope this makes sense.

My school does standards based grading, so I currently only take grades on tests. Prior to that, I took grades on any in-class assignment that met the school's priority standards. I did not grade center work or quizzes.

I send everything home, even if it was just for practice. Throughout the week I file their work into student mailboxes and then stuff their folders on Friday with their work from the week.
