Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello!
I am going to have a student with Down Syndrome in my general ed classroom this year. Can anyone provide me with web links or resources that might assist me with instructional practices? Thank you.

Remember that kids with Down syndrome span a wide intellectual range from severely to mildly disabled. Read the child's IEP to get an idea of where s/he is academically and socially. How much time will the special ed teacher service the child? Does the child receive PT, OT, and/or Speech? Will s/he be in or out of the classroom for services? Definitely plan together with the special ed teacher and specialists.

Does the child have a 1:1 aide/para? I had a 1:1 aide for one lower functioning child, but not for two others. Those 2 did get 1:1 aides by 2nd or 3rd grade as inclusion in academics became more difficult.

I loved the years when I had a child with Down syndrome in my pre-k to grade 1 classes! I especially loved how the other kids became friends and helped out their classmate without patronizing or babying. Everyone benefited in many ways from having full inclusion.

Here are a few websites to check out...

Will he be coming from a Special Ed class and with you for some subjects or with you all day. Either way I would reach out to the SE teacher or his last year teacher for recommendations.

Thank you for the resources and advice!
He is going to have a 1:1 aide. He has been described as a very social child but he can be defiant when it comes time to do anything he doesn't want to do such as leave the playground, work on math, etc.
His speech is very, very difficult to understand and I think that is my biggest concern...how will I communicate with him? I am hoping that I will adapt quickly and we will find our way together. He received a variety of services last year but I have not seen his IEP yet.
