How do you grade your first graders writing? And by grade I mean number grade 0-100. It is now a required grade for us as part of our LA/Reading grade. My team is just unsure as to how to go about giving a letter grade in writing to first graders.

We had a 6 point rubric, that followed the traits of writing. We counted 4-5-6 as an A, 3 was a B, 2 C, and 1 D (no Fís) I donít k ow who determined that, as it was explained to me when I joined the team, but thatís what we did.

We generally do a rubric also. Usually something like used caps and punctuation (always, sometimes, not at all) used first grade spelling (a/s/not at all). Used spaces(a/s/not at all)... made sense (yes, kinda, no but attempted to write, didnít write), and then ďniceĒ handwriting, which is obviously somewhat subjective by child. It changes a bit based on the assignment, but thatís the general idea.

explain to the parents that writing a complete sentence is the standard for the first trimester. We grade one sentence a week, from their practice book, and record that grade. If it's mostly passing, they receive a 4 in writing. Missing capitals or end marks is a 3, missing both a 2 or 1. Hope that helps!
