Because I can

Itís been more than 2.5 years since I retired and I still appreciate retirement every single day.

Yesterday and this morning, I smiled because:
I can delay getting ready for the day to watch the sunrise.
I can leisurely shop the Gap sale online and have clothes sent to my GS.
I can meet with the window guy at his convenience.
I can contemplate replacing all the windows, not just the ones that leaked in our (for us) big storm, because we financially planned for retirement.

Itís not all perfect, but life is pretty darned good.

What can you do?

I can stay late at a party on a weeknight without worrying about having to get up at 5:30 the next morning (and have a couple of adult beverages)

I can do my grocery shopping on a week day to avoid the crazy busy weekends.

I can decide to take a trip/cruise at the drop of a hat, and can take longer ones, (like a road trip to Oregon from Florida, or a 10 day cruise in January).

I can stay up and watch the late night shows.

I can sleep as late as I want, every day, after watching those late night shows!

And so many more..... oh, the joys and freedom that comes with retirement!

...DH and I can leisurely read newspaper and drink coffee to start our day.
...we choose the time we head over to our local rec center to play pickleball and hang out with friends.
...we can go to lunch during the week when it is less crowded.
...we are popping down to Florida for two weeks to visit with family and friends.
...our house is paid for so we plan several projects each year to keep it in tip top shape (2 furnaces and some landscaping projects this year)
...we keep up with politics and current events and often write or call congresspeople or local politicians with our thoughts.
...we live down the street from a university where we take advantage of lectures, games, concerts and plays.
...we hike during the week at the many state parks when the crowds are low.
...we walk on the beach almost daily (weather has really cooperated for us here).
Good luck with your window project amiga. I am sure this is an investment which you will be very happy with once it is done!

I can babysit our 13 month old when daycare is closed for federal holidays.

I can plan a fun day with another friend.
I can go out to breakfast with a group of teachers I worked with when I first started teaching.
I can spend the day with my sewing machine.
I can plan and take a vacation with my husband on our own schedule, not schoolís.

I can to the gym during the day for any class i want. If I take the 5:45 A.M. spin class, I can come home and go right back to bed when it's over.

I can take a vacation in months that are not the summer and take advantage of less crowds and off-peak prices. Currently planning a late fall vacation to the deep south.

I can meet other retired friends for lunch during the week.

I can go to movie matinees during the week or to the Thursday movies at the public library.

I can go to the place where I got my storm door to get an estimate on my three sets of closet doors that need replacing.

Medical appointments can be made at any time they have open, not just after 3:30.

When I have seen my teacher friends who are still working, they always comment on how relaxed I seem. Isn't that what the "R" in retirement is for? LOVE, LOVE, LOVE retirement!

I can schedule dentist and doctor appointments anytime.
I can go to social activities without worrying about school responsibilities.
I can get up in the morning without an alarm clock.
I can take time each morning for reading a devotional and the newspaper.
I can attend Pilates reformer classes mid morning.
I can go to the gym whenever I want.
I can live in the moment.
I can go to afternoon movies.
I am so grateful for the freedom that retirement brings.

Amen to all that!
And we don't have to plan ahead to make phone calls and use the restroom!
Ok, wonderful!

I can go out to lunch during the week!

I can take more than a half hour to have my lunch if I want to.

I can take art classes on weekdays or week nights. I will not miss work to take the class or have to worry about being tired and grumpy with my students the next day.

What wonderful lists! Isn't it nice to be able to do things when and how we want to? But I also have to mention the TIME WITH FAMILY that is so important. Before retirement, I was run ragged with meetings and lesson plans, and parent conferences, etc. I hardly had any time for my own family. Now I can spend quality time with them. Since retirement, I have had a close family member to pass away. What a joy it was to be able to spend time with them when they needed it the most!

.....I can drive my wife to her job (as a nurse) and pick her up later (after what is often a stressful day) thus allowing her to unwind in the car with me instead of more stress of wearily driving home in Atlanta area traffic!

...I used to bicycle commute (often in the cold dark) to/from school. But now, I ride in the warmer and lighter/brighter mid morning/afternoon with way less traffic and without wearing a 20 lb messenger bag holding my school clothes and lunch!

...concentrate on my tutoring business working just a few hours a day....online...in my home office....in my pajamas!

..learn how to cook dinner for my wonderful wife...oh wait... I'm probably never gonna learn to make dinner, but I can make a call and pick up a take out dinner order!

Cheers!
