Another Retirement Perk

Clip to ScrapBook #1

The bloodmobile came to town yesterday for a 3-day blood drive, but because the weather has been so bad, they arrived half a day late, and many appointments needed to be rescheduled within the days they will be here.

When I was called, the organizer was pretty frantic trying to slot people into times that would work.

Imagine her relief when I told her, "I'm retired and can adjust my schedule. What time are you having a hard time filling?"

So I was ready with my card at 8:00 this morning. Fastest donation time EVER! I'll have to keep that time slot in mind the next time.

I love being able to schedule things at pretty much any time. That's wonderful that you were able to donate blood.

Good for you, Beach Glass, for donating blood.

Like you, I find such joy in the relieved sighs of those making appointments when I say Iím open.

Yay for retirement! Beach Glass, thank you for donating blood. I have never been able to donate--not tall enough and not heavy enough--so I appreciate those who do.

DH has donated his whole life, and because he is a universal donor, they remind him all the time to come in. In the past four years we have frequently traveled to countries that are on the do-no-donate list, so he has not been able to donate because of the possible pathogens in his blood that could be detrimental to the recipient (like malaria). It really bothers him that he can't donate.

Blood Donation

Thank you for your kind comments.

Today's blood donation made a total of 81 units, so 10 gallons + 1 pint. I am O+, the universal donor.

I've been donating since the age of 17, when my mother was in charge of our local blood drives. Nothing like a nudge from home.

I think changes in documentation from the 1970s (paper/pencil) up to today (digital) and donations in various places due to college years may have caused some donations to slip through the cracks, but no matter.

Our blood drive had new devices today for weighing the blood as you donate. When the pint was complete, it made noises similar to a slot machine indicating a jackpot! Gotta love it.
