what theme are you planning for next year?

Hi all,
I found out I will be teaching a 3/4 combo next year and I'm struggling with a theme for my room. I wanted to see if anyone has been thinking about this. What are your thoughts at least and do you have any activities or decorations you are excited about?
Thanks!

I am doing an outer space theme to go along with our school theme of "Learning Can Take You Anywhere." I have done stars in the past, so this will let me expand on that. I did frogs last year and enjoyed it while it lasted. I try to avoid ocean and rain forest because so many do it, but I did briefly think of a cat theme. There just wasn't enough out there to use for it.

I have used a frog theme for the last several years. I use to change my theme every year, but it got to expensive. I have tons of frog things now, so I rotate things in and out each year.

I am doing a patriotic/red, white, and blue theme. I am really having a hard time coming up with cute bulletin board ideas though. Everything I think of is something I want left up for teaching history, not just cute stuff to start the year off with.

I have done African Safari, Beach, and Superhero themes in the past. I'm either going to do a Game theme or a GO GREEN theme. I asked my previous students and they said a Game theme would be so much fun!

I'm teaching 4th next year, so I thought that I could make an extension/challenge board "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"

I am mostly sticking with my jungle theme because I have so much stuff for it and I have enough on my plate with switching grades....I don't want to spend time worrying over putting up a completely new theme. Also, I love all the browns and greens! However, to mix it up a little bit, I will be tweaking it into more of a Survivor theme.

I've done ocean, ship, jungle, and Zoo themes in the past, but this year I'm moving up to 4th (from K) and decided to do "Fourth Grade Rocks!"... kind of a kid-friendly, rock and roll theme

Polka dots...

Clip to ScrapBook #12

Not really a theme per se...more of a color scheme. Last year I did black and white polka dot borders and accents with red fabric. This year I'm using poppin patterns border (black with multicolored dots) and yellow fabric. I like bright colors and I can keep changing things out while still using my few "expensive" polka dot pieces (rug and floor pillows) all year.

Travel Theme
Old 06-20-2010, 11:42 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #14

I've never done a theme before (it's only my second year and last year I didn't have time). But this year I've finally decided I'm going to go with a "travel" theme. I've contacted a bunch of tourism places to get free kids, travel guides, and maps. I'm planning on using them for bulletin board backdrops and along with a tea or coffee bag wash as some paper to use to decopage various things I come across at garage sales. For classroom management I'm going to have them grouped in "countries" and have some travel vocabulary used... we'll see how it turns out

4th grade theme

I was just told today that I am moving up the 4th grade from 1st. I was planning on doing an Ocean theme or a western theme. I may just stick with one of those. I have to choose a book to go with the theme though to decorate the door. Is Rainbow fish too young for 4th graders?

My school does not let us put anything on our walls that is store bought so I just decorate with colors. I used blue and green last year and that is what I am doing next year. I have done a "bee" theme and an "Americana" theme in the past and it was a lot of fun.

This year I am thinking of doing a Cooking Theme. I have also though of doing a whole sports theme, a western theme, or a super hero theme. Just a thought!

Why can't you put up store bought things!? How time consuming to have to make everything yourselves!

WOW...I have never heard of that! Just curious as to the reasoning behind that!

Classroom Theme

I have always done a theme for my classroom! The themes I have used in the past (that I can remember): Alaska, Australia, a card theme (playing cards), animal/safari, garden, and this year I am thinking about a circus theme! The hardest part is picking the theme, but once I figure it out, it just comes so easily! Good Luck!

Some of you have asked about why my school does not allow us to put store bought items on walls, etc. I really don't know why and I don't agree with it at all. We are only allowed to put up anchor charts that myself or my students create. All art work has to be "authentic." That means it has to be completely kid created. I once got into trouble because I bought a craft item from oriental trading and put the finished product on a bulletin board. It was an owl paper plate craft and we did it after reading Owl Moon. I had taught the reading comprehension strategy of asking questions as you read and along with the paper plate owls I posted the questions the children asked before, during and after reading the story. My principal told me to take it down. Our hallways are filled with pieces of notebook paper tacked to bulletin boards with little to no color. Our students are not allowed to color. You know that cute themed stationary that you can copy and have the kids write on it and then color the little pictures? We can't use that. And holidays and seasons? Forget it. Our superintendent has said she doesnt want to see any evidence of holidays or seasons when she walks through the schools. Standardized testing is to blame. Our superintendent thinks if we spend anytime doing seasonal or holiday stuff we are not focusing on the curriculum and our test scores will suffer.

Tammy-Are you doing just a Disney castle theme or Disney in general? I am thinking of doing a Disney theme in my 4th grade classroom. This will be my first year teaching 4th graders, my 3rd graders last year loved the idea, but I am nervous that 4th graders will think its too "childish". I want to get started with putting together my classroom but I need to settle on a theme first. Ideas?

Of course, I love them. I like the idea that 4th graders are starting to grow up (something happens during the summer between 3rd and 4th grade!) So the giraffe theme is about being ready to stick your neck out as a learner and take risks. Building confidence. There are no prepared materials for this, but every chance I get, I stick in something about giraffes.
