How do you start the year?
Old 07-11-2012, 09:50 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am moving from first to fourth this year. What are some things you do to start the year? Is there a favorite book that anyone uses to read at the very beginning of the year? The students start on a Thursday so I am trying to find activities to do with them. Most of what I would normally do is to young. TIA

I know for me, the best thing to do is to absolutely teach and model your procedures. If you have to, take all day long. Practice, practice, practice those routines. I can't stress it enough.

Thanks for your suggestions but after 25 years I understand about teaching and modeling expectations. I have had most of these kids before. I guess I didn't ask it right. I am looking for activities to do with them as well.

Start of School Year
Old 07-11-2012, 02:52 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #14

I moved up from 1st grade to 4th grade last year. I used some of the same stuff that was for any age. First Day Jitters, Friendship Salad, Magic Play Doh, etc.

Then I looked on proteacher for anything for older students. I found the "cootie catcher" last year. My fourth grade students really enjoyed the activity.

Another cheap and good idea is get a plastic ball from Walmart or even a dollar store beach ball. Write things in a sharpie all over it like....my favorite color, fav movie, book, last vacation I took, fav subject in school, etc. They toss it to someone and wherever their right thumb lands when they catch it, they answer that question. They get to move around and throw a ball. I used an enormous one I found for under 3 bucks and we went outside so it was double the fun.

You guys are all awesome! I can't wait to try out some of these on my 3rd graders this year. My school is a Baldrige School so we also use the first week to create a Quality Teacher/Quality Student, our class goals, mission, vision, etc. I am looking forward to tying some of these activities into creating these items.

PS, LOVE Save Fred! What a cute activity to promote teamwork and problem solving!
