Fourth Grade or Bust... what is your experience?

Good Morning! Here are my questions of the day...

1. How long have you taught fourth grade?
2. If you can be in another grade level what would it be?

I'll go first...

1. I've taught fourth grade for eight years. Two of those years were in 3/4 splits but the rest were straight 4th.

2. You know, I've taught first through fourth. I love the independence at fourth and their humor. I also like how they are not hormonal... yet. At times I do miss the cuteness of the younger grades but overall, I'm very happy in fourth!

I love fourth grade

I taught it for four years straight in my old school.

I've taught two other grades in between and now I am back in fourth for this year. I wish I could stay but I don't think that will happen. (It's complicated.)

I guess I like third grade next. I've taught third for five years and then I taught it last year. I taught second - I didn't enjoy it. I taught pre-k for 17 years. I'm too old for that.

I'd love to stay in fourth.

I'm finishing up my 18th year (is that possible?) in 4th grade. I subbed in all grades prior to that, and really wasn't sure 4th grade was for me. Boy, was I wrong! I LOVE this age! Most kids are still pretty much teacher pleasers and the teen attitudes and drama haven't set in yet.

This! You summed up my thoughts perfectly.
I know a lot of people like to switch grade levels, but I get plenty of change every day and every year. I'm hoping to stay in 4th grade for the rest of my teaching career.

This is my 3rd year in 4th grade. It was not by choice - my former principal did a reshuffling. I like 4th OK but prefer 3rd (where I was originally). New principal has talked me out of retiring this year by saying he mig be able to put me back.

is my second year in fourth- after 13 years in primary. I like it a lot- especially as I am getting older and find it tough to sit on the carpet with kids. I enjoy joking with the fourth graders. I had quite a few of these kids when they were in first grade. I keep telling them that I categorically know that they were taught about topic sentences in first grade- we should not be having the same conversation in fourth!

However, that being said, I loved teaching first grade. They make such tremendous growth in their reading ability.

. . . the very best! I taught 42 years, and 34 of them were in fourth grade. They are still young enough to want to please the teacher but old enough to be able to work independently. I don't think it gets any better than fourth grade.

I've taught 4th for 5 years. 4 of those have been at my current school, and one of these four was the year I taught ELA to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th! Yikes. That was rough. Our school has gone through many changes since I started. My recent stint in 4th was NOT by choice and I had no idea I was moving to 4th, either.

I think I might prefer 3rd, just because I HATE teaching all the requirements for the Writing STAAR.

13 years in 4th for me
Started as Title 1, left 4th for 2 years (my choice to try out second grade) and returned to 4th

It is my absolute favorite grade level! I love the age, the books we read, the attitude/spirit, enthusiasm for learning, and the curriculum.

I've been at fourth grade for over 25 years... I did a stint in 5th, 2nd and 3rd, and even a multi age 3/4, but I love fourth the best.

I remember reading an awesome book years ago called, "Celebrating the Fourth." I suggest any fourth grade lovers to read it.

Oh, and my 43 year old husband behaves like a fourth grader, so I "live it," too!

So, I'm very happy in fourth.

1. How long have you taught fourth grade?
~16 years

2. If you can be in another grade level what would it be?
~I would try 3rd and I think I'd like it. I've tried 5th for a year and absolutely HATED everything about it....the attitudes, the curriculum, the clicks of friendships/crushes, etc.

I have taught 10 years in 4th grade and love it so much. I was pushed down to K for 2 years and did not like it at all. So glad to have been placed backed into 4th grade. I love them to death.

Fourth is my favorite!
I've been in 4th for 7 years.
I'd teach 1st if I had to move grades. I've taught 3rd and kinder and pre-k too, but had a long stint in first and found it wonderful. But for now, I love fourth!!!

I've taught 4th grade 4 times, always as a split. Grades 3/4 or 4/5.

I have always enjoyed the middle of elementary -- Grades 2-4.

I have looped 4th and 5th for 11 years, so taught 4th every other year. I enjoy 4th grade, but I really like 5th and when we dropped looping last year, landed in 5th grade. I will be moving to 3rd next year and am not sure yet how much I will like it. I'll miss my 5th graders.

This is my second year in fourth grade and my 21st year teaching.

I would prefer to teach second. I loved teaching second the 5 years that I did it. I'm hoping that I'll be put back in second next year.

This is my first year in fourth and I really like it. My favorite grades are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but now that I've been in fourth for this school year, I really appreciate the independence that comes along with this age group as opposed to the other grades. I wouldn't want to go any higher than 4th. The hormones and attitudes are a bit much for me in 5th. In 4th they still want to please.

1. This is my first year. So far, I really like this age! I am struggling some with teaching math concepts in the clearest way but I have veteran teachers helping me. In the past, I taught SPED and EFL so this is my first year teaching math above a 3rd level really.

2. Third or fourth. First and second is too dependent for me. I don't mind fifth or sixth but again, I'm not used to teaching the higher math concepts and worry about explaining things in a confusing manner.

I am putting in for a 4th grade position next year and I so hope I get it! I have been in the district for less than a year so I have zero seniority, so my biggest hope is that nobody else wants it, lol. 4th graders are sweet and independent and the curriculum is actually interesting to me. Fingers crossed!!

first year in fourth

Clip to ScrapBook #23

This is my 20th year in education, 8 in K, 1 in first, 4 in second and 6 as academic coach. I moved after the first 6 weeks of school from 2nd to 4th. I love the kids, took some adjustment, since I've always been primary at heart, but what I really don't like is all the testing. It is so stressful and so much of it too! We have all of our end of year tests now, at the end of March with two more months to go! My kiddos are taking a test every week for the district until State exams - that's 4 weeks of testing!! I want to try one year in fourth from the beginning of the year, and maybe figure out a way to make test taking less stressful for my kids and I.

I love the third/fourth grade age...they are the best in my opinion! They are still sweet enough and independent, however their naughty side creeps out towards the end of the year and I just pass them on to the next teacher hormones blazing!

Fourth Grade...
Old 07-20-2014, 08:33 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #27

Well, I started 21 years ago in fourth grade and taught it for 5 years. My last year there I had 36 students! and was given the opportunity to move to 3rd with only 20 students...I jumped at the chance. 20 students is a HUGE difference compared to 36 students. I taught 3rd for the next 16 years and loved it, but always said, "I love 4th grade curriculum and if they would give me 20 students, I would take 4th in a heartbeat." Well, I am going back to fourth grade next year...not by choice, but I know I will love it once I get reused to the large class size.
