Mystery location via skype
Old 07-28-2011, 07:57 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I saw a great post on Langwitches Blog showing an activity where students use computers, maps etc. to ask questions to narrow down the location of a mystery class. This was all done with skype and asking questions with just yes or no answers. I did it with a class using email but would like to try the same concept with skype. I think I could get my class ready by the beginning of October--anyone else interested in participating?

I would love to participate, but I am not the most technical person. Could you give me a little more detail on how it would work?
Wouldn't it be great to pair up with a different school in a different state each week?

I have seen those too. I won't volunteer my class to participate because of time zone differences but if you want an international (New Zealand) skype then I would be happy to help out.

Details re:mystery location via skype
Old 07-28-2011, 03:06 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #6

This is how I see this activity working best--feel free to add your ideas.
1) Pre-teach effective questioning skills, map-reading, familiarize students with google maps, map of North America or world
2) Determine a skype time with mystery class--assign roles to students (questioners, students researching with maps, on computers, note-takers, etc.)
3) Class A asks a geography question--if the answer is 'yes', they get to ask another question
--if the answer is 'no', Class B gets to ask a question
4) Continue for a specified amount of time-- I'm thinking the process will get quicker the more the students get used to asking 'good' questions but because there is a lot of checking, conferring and collaborating that needs to be done more than one session may be necessary.

When I did this project via email last year, we used google docs and traded 3 questions per week. At first, coming up with the questions took a lot of time, but then they got quicker and better at asking questions that really narrowed down the location. It ended up taking 5 weeks as we had time zone differences, different school years etc.
But it was totally worth it!

Other questions or thoughts?

Gaggle.net option for time zone issues

Jenny, I think the gaggle.net option would solve the time zone difference. (I think I said google docs previously)--
I'd be interested in 'finding' your class in October if you are still interested then.
PM me if you are.

BMc when you did this via email how long did you go back and forth with another class? As long as it took to figure out the location?
Maybe it would be realistic starting in October to do one mystery location a month?
I think your ideas are great.

5-6 sessions with email
Old 07-28-2011, 04:33 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #9

I think we exchanged 5 or 6 sets of questions (3 at a time). Depending on time availability, it could probably be done via email in a month--maybe less if there wen't too many interruptions at either end.
And yes, we continued until we discovered each other's location.
We had one more interaction where we posted pictures of our cities.

That would be fantastic! I have been looking for more interesting and meaningful ways to teach/apply their map skills, and this sounds absolutely perfect!

Count me in. I love the idea of one mystery location a month - or every two months, depending on how many people we have participating.

Okay, this will be great. Once I get back to school at the end of August, I will pull the prep. activities and post them for anyone who is interested. This will include introductory problem-solving games and activities to help your students begin to develop good questioning and reasoning techniques before they begin their hunt.

Then connections can be made and classes can decide on their own timeline and whether they will use email or skype.
Looking forward to this!

I would like to try this, but I have never used Skype and new to 4th grade.

We have a tech guy whose job is to help us integrate more technology, so I will have him help me.

One issue is we start late (8:45) so to Skype with most people on the east cost it would have to be first thing in the morning for us and before school let out for you guys.

Please PM and let me know the best way to do this.

Mystery Class information
Old 08-31-2011, 07:48 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #42

I am having trouble posting the introductory activities for this project. They exceed the attachment size. If you have not done so already, please PM me with your email address and I will send the attachments out in email. Thanks

Here is a description of how I plan on starting this project after my class has practiced the introductory activities.

I plan on having my class locate another grade 4 class within our city as practice. I have arranged to do this via email with another teacher. Here are the steps we have planned.
1) My class will send an introductory paragraph about our classroom (without giving any hints of our location of course) to our mystery class.
2) We will also send 3 questions about our mystery class's location that can be answered only with 'yes' or 'no'. When we are developing our questions, I will project a map and let the students pull up a map of our city on google maps on our computers and ipods.
3) The other class will answer our questions and send 3 questions of their own.
4) We will use their answers to redefine and direct our next set of questions. (I will copy a map of our city for each student and we will block out the areas that have been eliminated)
5) We will use our new information and ask the next set of 3 questions to narrow down our mystery class's location further. Again, we will send the questions via email and await their response.
6) This process will continue back and forth until one of us finds each other! (A previous email mystery class project took 5 rounds of questions each--however, it was across continents)

**Note--I do not direct or suggest questions for the students to ask. I put students into groups and each group comes up with 3 questions. All the questions are listed on the board and as a class we decide which 3 are the best. Developing 3 good questions can take up to an hour and a half. Students have to convince their classmates to use their questions.

My plan is to participate in a few email mystery classes before we try doing it with skype. I think after a few rounds, we will be ready to 'go live'

Here is the actual cartesian grid to use with the first 3 pages.

Please PM me with your email address if you have not done so and want to be included in the spreadsheet that I will be creating in the next few weeks.

I would be interested in emailing with your class. We're in Southern Indiana. Very historic area in Indiana and the state's 1st capital.
Let me know if you are interested.

Many of you expressed interest in this activity on the original post. If you still have interest but have not contacted Bonnie, please put your email on this thread so that we can make a larger database of interested teachers. This has been a great activity for all involved, we just need more people to participate!
