Ok, hereís my dilemma

So, I really need to go into school (35 min drive) to set up. I went Tuesday but couldn’t get in.

I tried calling the district office to see if schools were open and no answer. I really don’t want to make the drive for nothing. My new P told me the school wouldn’t open “normal business hours” all break.

Do I risk it? Do I bother her over break to confirm? Do I sit on the couch like a slug (what I really want to do )?

Tough choices here.

Thoughts?

I don't think there's anything wrong with sending an email asking. It's after Christmas. I probably wouldn't call, but that's just me. I assume she would understand that you need to get in and set up before Day 1. Our school has weird hours and only select days when they are open over break.

I would wait until after New Year's Day and then send an email asking what day you can get in to set up. Many of the other teachers probably want to go in before the break is over to get ready, too. My school used to have preset days that we could go in.

We go back the day after NYD, so waiting that long wouldn't work here. When do you go back?

We can card in anytime, but also got an email that one hall wing was shut down most of break due to the installing a floor obstacle course ( painted on) and needs 6 coats of wax to seal it well!

I would email and ask about hours. Our secretary, custodians, and P are there everyday except Christmas and NYD unless they take vacation time, so the school is open.

I sent her an email double checking on Monday. Too lazy to go today.

Donít go. If P says schools not opened...believe him. And enjoy this time off.

I vote for sitting on couch like a slug.

But that could be because it is exactly what I am doing today!

Well, I did already get my hair done and return a package to UPS. I'm done now.

Anything else you could do out that way?

If she doesn't get back to you, you could take a drive out there next week and see if it's open. My school district, if it was open at all, had very limited days where the custodians were there. Our swipe cards did not work on vacation days, so we would have to be let in by one of the custodians. If there is anything else you could do out that way, shopping, a movie, meeting a friend,, I would have an alternate plan. It is annoying to go over a half hour away for nothing.

And if she doesn't get back to you, well, you did the best you could to set up early. Nothing you can do if you have no access, so being lazy is as good as anything.

Here, only admin and custodians have keys. So we can only get in when they are there. And custodians have the 24th and 31st off in addition to the actual holiday.

In my district technically you would be able to get in Monday. But, here, while the custodian is there, they don't answer the door unless you have arranged it in advance.

I know you are anxious and want to get in. I hope you get an answer and are able to do so. If not, try to relax. Take deep breaths and keep repeating 'it will work out'.

Several of my colleagues including me go into work on a regular basis. There is no way I can get everything done in the time I'm actually at school.

Granted my building is old but we all have keys and come and go as we see fit. Why are only admins allowed to have keys?

I have about 4 hours of work to do to get ready for the new year and I cannot imagine not being able to go in ahead of time. As soon as I'm feeling better and over my sickness, I'm going!

Our schools are all completely shut down for both weeks of break, admin and custodian staff arenít on campus at all.

However, we are required to receive 3 days of setup if we start a new position mid-year. Do you get anything similar?

Our school alone has over 70 employees... no way could we all have a master key and alarm code. The building is normally open 6-7, many dayís later. I come about 45 mins before duty day and leave around 30 minutes after... after 11 years I refuse to donate any more of my own time.
