Does anyone have any suggestions or directions to help me with implementing literature circles and novel studies?

Reading Groups

I liked teaching one genre at a time in reading. I would chose the genre and then select three novels at different levels to use in my three groups. I had one for my low group, one for my on grade level group and one for my high group.

But I could still teach some mini lessons whole class about the characteristics of that genre. It gave some commonalities for literature discussion in class and I liked that. This is just how I organized groups in my third and fourth grade classes.

I also selected picture books from the same genre to help me teach the traits of this genre. I used these books as whole class read alouds before the mini lesson.

The important thing is to choose books the kids will be excited about. If reading is fun they will want to read. Select stories you like and your love for the literature will be passed on to your students.

Jen Bengel has wonderful ideas and offers free webinars and Facebook Live sessions you can tune into. Laura Candler is also good.
