Tomato sandwiches

One of my comfort foods has always been open-faced tomato and cheese “toasties,” as I call them. I very lightly toast a piece of bread, butter it, then put sliced tomatoes on it, very lightly salt and pepper; and add a slice of Swiss, Provolone, or Mozzarella cheese on top. Then I put it in the toaster oven or regular oven for about 10 minutes on about 250 or 300 degrees — just long enough to warm the tomatoes and melt the cheese. Yum!

Never tried it. I've barely started making BLTA sandwiches and they're good!

Mom23kids, no idea on calories, sorry. I’ve been fortunate so far to never have to pay attention to calories.

I love a good tomato sandwich

It's the one thing I think tastes particularly scrumptious with Miracle Whip.

When I was pregnant with my first, I had a thing for corn tortillas stuffed with cheese and fresh tomatoes, toasted on each side in a little bit of oil.

I have had a tomato sandwich for lunch probably 10 days out of the last 2 weeks. I can never have too much!

Being Italian, tomato sandwiches were/are a staple. A toasted tomato sandwich with a sprinkling of black pepper and garlic powder is a common lunch during the summer for me.

Love them. It's one of my childhood memories that I've passed on to my oldest son. He and I both love tomato sandwiches.

They are so good! We always had them growing up. My grandparents had a wonderful garden. Their tomatoes were so good we would just pick one and eat it. I still love tomato sandwiches!

Oh, yes please!! One of my all-time favorite summertime treats is a sandwich made with a tomato fresh out of the garden with a sprinkle of coarse salt, fresh basil, and a drizzle of olive oil on crusty Italian bread. I need one RIGHT NOW!!

I had one for lunch today and yesterday. We toast ours and put Hellman's mayonnaise and tomatoes on them. I could eat one everyday. Garden fresh tomatoes are delicious.

Sportsmom88, that's how I make them. The tricky part is getting good tomatoes. (I'm not a gardener.)

My mother had a similar “recipe” that she and other student nurses made back in the early 1950s. She called them “Cheese Dreams”, and they became an annual request for us kids during tomato season.

Now remember, this is from the 50s and 60s, so no judging the ingredients!

A slice of white bread, a layer of sliced tomatoes, slices of Velveeta cheese to cover tomatoes, topped with slices of par-fried bacon (With 6 kids, Mom always used 2 half slices, As an adult who loves bacon, I use 3 ). Place under the broiler until the Velveeta is melted and the Bacon is crisp.

It was definitely summer when the first Cheese Dreams come out of the broiler!!

I never even used to like tomatoes unless they were part of spaghetti sauce.😊I knew Harriet the Spy loved tomato sandwiches, and it is not a question of calories - It is warm from the sun just ripe tomatoes and mayonnaise and pepper and bread. Watch the tomato episode of A Chef’s Life - Vivian Howard, season one episode five. Oh yummmmmm!

Peanut butter & tomatoes might sound disgusting, but they actually make a very good sandwich.

We had rows of tomatoe plants growing up and the tomatoes were fabulous! I ate more than my fair share, but I never had just a tomato sandwich. Tomatoe and bacon, yes. One of my favs. I never even considered without bacon.

Going to try it thus week. Can’t imagine how it could be bad. Mayo is a given. Chipotle mayo is even better.

Tomato and peanut butter? Hummm. Don’t know about that. My aunt eats fried egg and pb. I haven’t tried that either. My uncle puts pb on his hamburgers. Weird.
